PETALING JAYA: Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s “exposé” on Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today is unlikely to cause any damage to the Umno president nor the party, says a political analyst.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Tajuddin was not the most “credible” of sources given his missteps and controversies in the past, one of which contributed to his sacking as Prasarana Malaysia Bhd chairman last year.

“Not many people will believe Tajuddin’s claims as he has proven to be a liability during his tenure as Prasarana chairman.

“His claims are also unlikely to have a negative impact on Zahid and the party given that he has no influence over other members,” he told FMT.

At a press conference, Tajuddin claimed that he was a “living witness” to how Umno MPs led by Zahid had signed statutory declarations (SDs) last year backing opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.

He also claimed that 130 Umno division chiefs wanted Zahid to step down as party president in 2020, with the movement allegedly led by Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

The Pasir Salak MP then urged Zahid to resign as Umno president “for the sake of the party”, to allow Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to take over the top post.

Azmi also believed that Tajuddin’s claims would not be taken seriously as they came days after he was removed from the Umno Supreme Council.

With Tajuddin just being an ordinary member and the ambassador-designate to Indonesia, Azmi said the party was unlikely to take any action against him.

Meanwhile, Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said Tajuddin could be summoned by the party’s disciplinary committee for his claims but believed the controversial MP was unlikely to resign from Umno.

Last week, Tajuddin was dropped from the Umno Supreme Council. Zahid was reported to have said that he was removed as he had been critical of the party.
