Anwar pitches to PKR grassroots why he's standing by Idris' group
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim made the case to his party grassroots on why he’s standing by Idris Haron, who was sacked from Umno for bringing down the Malacca government, and his allies.
At the virtual launch of the party's Malacca polls machinery last night, Anwar said Idris and three other assemblypersons withdrew their support for the Bersatu-Umno state government based on negotiations with Pakatan Harapan.
Therefore, he said, Harapan cannot abandon them when things did not go the way they wanted.
“The fact is clear. There was a negotiation between Malacca Harapan with the said assemblypersons.
“The negotiation led them to decide to pull their support from the state government, in an understanding that they would not be betrayed and left behind afterwards,” Anwar said.
The Malacca snap election was triggered last month after an unsuccessful political coup against the Umno-led state government, which saw four pro-government assemblypersons withdrawing their support for then chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.
Besides Idris, the three others are Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu).
In a press conference two days ago, Anwar told reporters that Harapan is still open to cooperating with Idris, Nor Azman and Noor Effandi as the trio were not part of the “Sheraton Move” last year to oust Harapan from the federal government and instead wanted to return the mandate given by voters to Harapan.
Norhizam Hassan Baktee
Harapan has been clear in its rejection of Norhizam, whose defection from DAP last year had in part contributed to the downfall of the then Harapan-led Malacca government.
Two being considered
Anwar told his party members that two of the assemblypersons are still being considered.
He did not mention any names in specific but said that they originally came from Umno.
He did not elaborate on the status of the third assemblyperson from Bersatu.
“There were four, and now we are close to finalising (the discussion), only two assemblypersons who came from Umno... we are discussing their status, whether they can be accepted or not,” Anwar said.
The Harapan chairperson also explained to party members about the need to be understanding, saying that the party needs to be tactical in order to garner support from everyone.
“You must understand that changes have to happen, but not with our uncompromising attitude.
“It can happen only when we are being wise (hemah), being intelligent and by attracting support from every quarter.”
