Going solo in Melaka polls would be tough, says Bersatu veep
Ahmad Faizal Azumu says forming an alliance with others is important to strengthen the party’s position
Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the party’s divisions in Melaka are not strong enough to face the state election without cooperation with other parties.
PETALING JAYA: Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu has acknowledged that the party will face an uphill battle if it goes solo in the Melaka state election.
Faizal, also known as Peja, said forming an alliance with others was important to strengthen the party’s position.
“In general, we need to have an alliance. Without an alliance, it would be difficult for us to move forward on our own.
“This is because the strength of the divisions in Melaka themselves is not yet sufficient for us to go it alone,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
He was responding to a question on whether Bersatu would contest on its own or cooperate with other political parties. He declined to elaborate on whether the alliance he referred to would be with Perikatan Nasional (PN) or others.
Bersatu, despite remaining part of PN, contested the Negeri Sembilan election under its own logo. However, it lost all 22 seats it vied for.
“I think PN is increasingly forgetting about us. We are good people; we do not forget others,” Faizal said.
On whether Bersatu would contest the Melaka election using its own logo, Faizal said the party leadership had yet to decide.
“We will decide later. For now, we are still assessing our strength in all constituencies, and I myself have gone down to conduct audits and inspections of all divisions throughout Melaka.
“When the time comes, we will make a decision,” he said.
Yesterday, Melaka Bersatu information chief Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said the state chapter was ready to hold talks with parties that share common ground, particularly Pakatan Harapan, to explore some form of understanding ahead of the state election.
He said that for the party’s survival and future, all options must be studied rationally and with an open mind.
