KANGAR: A new Perlis executive council (exco) can be formed if just four more members are appointed, says Mentri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.

He said the minimum number required is one-third of the total number of state assemblymen.

"Without the Mentri Besar, it is four and with the Mentri Besar, it becomes five. This means we can proceed with the formation of the exco as soon as possible," he told a press conference at Kompleks Seri Putra here on Tuesday (Dec 30).

There are 15 seats in the Perlis State Assembly.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said on Tuesday that the party had decided not to be part of the exco to be formed by Abu Bakar.

He said all existing PAS exco members would resign in solidarity following the resignation of former mentri besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

Abu Bakar, who is also Perlis Perikatan Nasional deputy chairman, said exco portfolios could be consolidated or abolished to reduce the administrative burden.

Abu Bakar, 57, who is also Kuala Perlis assemblyman from Bersatu, was sworn in before the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail on Sunday. – Bernama

  1. Why Kedah never reclaim Perlis which was carved out and created by Siam and perpetuated by the colonial Brittania? Only fokus on Penang Penang Penang.

Perlis split from Kedah due to Siam's "divide and rule" policy after conquering Kedah in 1821, formally establishing Perlis as a separate vassal state under Siamese control around 1842, with its own Raja (Syed Hussain Jamalullail), a move solidified by the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty that transferred suzerainty to the British, maintaining Perlis as distinct from Kedah.

    Key Factors in the Split:
Siamese Invasion (1821): Siam invaded and conquered Kedah, displacing the Sultan, who later fought to regain his throne.
"Divide and Rule": The Siamese, to better control the region, partitioned Kedah into several territories, including Perlis, Satun, and Kubang Pasu, making them separate Siamese tributaries.

Restoration of Kedah Sultanate (1842): The exiled Kedah Sultan eventually agreed to Siamese terms, but Perlis remained separated as a distinct principality.
Establishment of Perlis Raja: Syed Hussain Jamalullail, a descendant of the Kedah Sultan, was appointed as the first Raja of Perlis by the Siamese, establishing the Jamalullail dynasty.

Anglo-Siamese Treaty (1909): Siam ceded Perlis (along with Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu) to the British, formalizing its separation and placing it under British protection as an Unfederated Malay State.

In essence, Perlis became independent from Kedah not through internal rebellion but as a strategic move by Siam to fragment its control over the northern Malay states, a division that persisted through British colonial rule and into modern Malaysia.

    1. Perlis was forcibly carved out of Kedah by the Siamese, as punishment to the Sultan of Kedah for his rebellion against Siamese suzerainty..
The British subsequently took possession of these two states As They Were.
So Perlis and Kedah became separate States under British effective control except for matters of Malay Adat and Islamic religion.

Funny how Sanusi is totally silent on this part of Kedah's history.

  2. It's so clear, Perlis don't even have a Sultan, but a Raja. Ever wondered why?

History of the House of Jamalulail, of Arab origin.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Jamalullail_(Perlis)

Before the House of Jamalullail ascended to rule as the Rajas of Perlis, the most prominent title in Perlis was the Raja Muda or Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Perlis and Kedah (crown prince of Perlis and Kedah), a title comparable to Prince of Wales within the United Kingdom. Sultan Dhiauddin II of Kedah who built Kota Indera Kayangan as his capital was honorifically titled as Raja Muda of Perlis and Kedah. He was titled as such in a treaty to cede Province Wellesley.
