Hannah orders probe into sprinter’s SEA Games withdrawal

Youth and sports minister says the National Sports Council will act if any misconduct is found

Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said athlete selection is based on merit.

PETALING JAYA: Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh has instructed the National Sports Council (MSN) to obtain a full report from Malaysia Athletics (MA) on the withdrawal of athlete Danish Irfan Tamrin from the SEA Games squad.

Describing the matter as serious, Yeoh said the investigation is intended to ensure a swift resolution, Bernama reported.

“We cannot draw conclusions based solely on social media reports. An investigation is under way.

“Should any misconduct be found, MSN will take the appropriate action,” she was quoted as saying at a press conference announcing her ministry’s grant here today.

FMT previously reported that the national sprinter was instructed by his coach to fake an injury and withdraw from Malaysia’s 4x100m squad at the SEA Games in Thailand.

MA secretary-general Nurhayati Karim met Danish’s parents and has since said the federation would investigate the matter “transparently and thoroughly”.

Yeoh said all athlete selections must be professional and merit-based, taking into account factors such as timing, distance, and current performance.

“I want to assure parents that athlete selection is based on merit. Otherwise, Malaysia stands to lose,” she said.

Malaysia Pencak Silat Team Attacks Referees and Organisers After Controversial SEA Games Loss

Members of the Malaysian Pencak Silat team attacked referees and organisers following a disputed quarterfinal loss to host nation Thailand at the 33rd SEA Games yesterday.

Malaysian athlete Nor Farah Mazlan fought to a 60-60 stalemate against Thailand’s Jongtima Ruenthong in the women’s Class B (50–55 kg) category at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani. Officials awarded the win to Jongtima based on a tie-breaker rule, citing that Nor Farah committed more fouls. The decision angered the Malaysian team, who argued that Nor Farah had been more proactive and effective during the match.

Head coach Siti Rahmah Mohamed Nasir, along with Nor Farah and several staff members, protested the ruling. When verbal appeals failed, some team members physically assaulted referees and organisers, forcing security and police to intervene. The match was temporarily suspended before resuming, with the Thai victory upheld.

The incident has sparked debate over scoring fairness in Pencak Silat, a Southeast Asian martial art combining combat and artistic movements.
