Thirteen people are dead, including one shooter, after gunshots were fired at Bondi beach in Sydney on Sunday evening. Here’s what we know so far:
The New South Wales premier, Chris Minns, said 13 people had been killed in a mass shooting at Bondi beach on Sunday evening, including one believed to be one of the shooters.
A second alleged shooter was in a critical condition, police said earlier.
Police have designated the attack a terrorism incident.
They said they were investigating whether there was a third attacker.
Police said 29 people had been taken to hospital, including two police officers – they were in a range of conditions.
Police and emergency services were called to Campbell Parade, the main road running behind the beach, at about 6.45pm, after reports of multiple shots being fired.
Video shared online from the scene showed people fleeing the beach, and distressing scenes of people lying on the ground receiving treatment.
Shortly before 8pm police said they had two people in custody and the active shooters had been “neutralised”.
An event celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukah was taking place on the beach at the time of the shooting.
The co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Alex Ryvchin, said the organisation’s director of media had been injured in the incident.
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said the scenes were “shocking and distressing”.
The NSW premier, Chris Minns, said the reports and images coming from Bondi were “deeply distressing”.
The opposition leader, Sussan Ley, said Australians were “in deep mourning”, with “hateful violence striking at the heart of an iconic Australian community, a place we all know so well and love”.
