The Pasir Gudang MP says he is interested in the ‘local issues’ being raised by residents, and that he will help them if he can.
HULU SELANGOR: PKR’s Hassan Karim made an unexpected appearance on the campaign trail of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) candidate Hafizah Zainuddin today, but says he was not there to campaign for her.
The Pasir Gudang MP told reporters he was at the campaign event as an “observer” after learning that issues involving Kuala Kubu Baharu residents would be discussed there.
“This is the first place I went to (in Kuala Kubu Baharu) because I was told there were issues involving the people, (specifically) estate workers.
“This is good because this means this by-election has concrete issues that the soon-to-be elected assemblyman must resolve. So that’s why I’m here, to observe,” said Hassan.
Asked if he was there to support the PRM candidate, he reiterated that he was a Pakatan Harapan and PKR MP. However, he added that many from PRM were friends of his.
“This was my former party after all. Also, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) is an old friend. But what’s important is that I’m not here for politics but for the people’s issues, as an observer.
“If I can help, I will. I might speak to the (Selangor) menteri besar (Amirudin Shari) after I’ve studied the issue,” he said.
Earlier, PSM deputy chairman S Arutchelvan was spotted with Hafizah but he, too, did not disclose if he was backing the PRM candidate. He said he was there simply to speak out on issues affecting the Kuala Kubu Baharu people.
Independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin was also present at the event.
Hafizah is in a four-cornered fight for the state seat against PH’s Pang Sock Tao, Perikatan Nasional’s Khairul Azhari Saut and Nyau. Polling is on May 11.
