‘Diplomatic tsunami this week’ but Israel carries on killing
Raymond Johansen, secretary-general of Norwegian People’s Aid, says as more countries recognise Palestinian statehood, this will hopefully put pressure on Israel for a negotiated solution.
“It’s very far away from negotiations between parties right now, but [Norway’s decision to recognise Palestine] was a step in the right direction,” the former Norwegian state secretary for foreign affairs told Al Jazeera.
Johansen added the US has always been the closest ally to Israel, and if Washington changes its policy and “put pressure on Israel”, then there will be a change in the moribund peace process.
“But not before that because definitely the Israeli government has so much self confidence in what they are doing, saying they will ‘clean up’ everything. So far they have been able to continue because the resistance towards their policy has not been strong enough.
“We have even seen a kind of diplomatic tsunami this week, but it does not have any impact for the Israeli government and the [Israeli forces] right now.”

Further recognition of Palestinian statehood a ‘matter of time’: Ambassador
The Palestinian ambassador to Ireland says Dublin’s recognition of a Palestinian state is not merely a symbolic gesture but “significant and real”.
Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid told Reuters that Palestinians will use this recognition as a launching pad to get similar results from other European countries.
Ireland officially recognised a Palestinian state in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the government said in a statement, defying Israel, which had condemned the plan.
“The government recognises Palestine as a sovereign and independent state and agreed to establish full diplomatic relations between Dublin and Ramallah,” the statement said.
“An ambassador of Ireland to the State of Palestine will be appointed along with a full Embassy of Ireland in Ramallah.”

Only one-third of Gaza’s hospitals remain even partially functional: WHO
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, has said that the injured from Sunday night’s Israeli attack on Rafah are being treated in “an already overwhelmed WHO-supported trauma stabilisation point as well as other field hospitals” in the southern Gaza Strip city.
In a post on X, he said that almost one million displaced people are “once again in search of safety that doesn’t exist in Gaza”.
“The ongoing closure of the Rafah border, lack of fuel and aid getting into and across Gaza, and frequent mission delays and denials have choked our ability to support the health system at a time when operations should be rapidly growing to meet the rising needs,” he added.
He said the hospitals that are barely functioning are struggling to meet needs due to lack of adequate supplies, equipment, fuel and exhausted staff.
“Open the Rafah crossing. Ensure missions can proceed in a timely manner. Protect civilians and health care. Ceasefire,” he said.
