PAS facing infighting in Perlis, claims ally

Perlis PAS is reportedly having infighting, causing uneasiness among its Perikatan Nasional ally over the conflict's impact on their coalition and state administration.

According to Perlis Bersatu chairperson Abu Bakar Hamzah, the internal row spans several issues including "religious understanding" and matters related to state governance.

Free Malaysia Today quoted Abu Bakar (above) as saying today that the Perlis PAS internal conflict had put the state Bersatu chapter in an awkward situation.

"PAS is having a turmoil in Perlis, there is no unity among us," he reportedly said.

However, Abu Bakar said Bersatu has no intention to get involved in PAS internal matters, but they hoped for it to be resolved soon so PN can focus on strengthening their machinery in Perlis.

‘It’s under control’

Meanwhile, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin reportedly said the internal rift in Perlis PAS is still under control and will be resolved within a week.

Hashim said disagreement is normal in political parties.

In the 15th general election last year, PN recorded a landslide victory in Perlis after the coalition won 14 out of 15 state assembly seats.

The only seat that PN lost was Indera Kayangan to Pakatan Harapan.

Following the major victory, PN chose Perlis PAS chief Mohd Shukri Ramli, who is Sanglang representative, as the state's new menteri besar.

Since PAS took over the state administration, there have been several incidents between state government bodies and PAS.

These include action taken by the Perlis Islamic Affairs Department against a closed-door event held at Kangar PAS division premises in March, which allegedly involved an Islamic preacher who was not authorised to operate in the state.

The action had reportedly caused a strenuous relationship between the agency and state PAS.

It led to Kangar PAS division chief Yussaine Yahya being charged in court for organising the event with unauthorised preacher Mohamad Wadi Anuar Ayub.
