Apologise, Umno man tells DAP Youth chief over ‘celaka’ remark

Shahril Hamdan says Howard Lee was rude to describe Umno as ‘damned and wretched’.

PETALING JAYA: DAP Youth chief Howard Lee, who described Umno as a “damned” party (“parti celaka”), should apologise for his harsh language, Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan said today.

Shahril said that being an opposition assemblyman in Perak, Lee should be aware that he receives an equal allocation as those from Barisan Nasional (BN) from the state government, which is led by Umno.

“I want to remind the Pasir Pinji assemblyman that the party he calls damned and wretched gives an equal allocation to both BN and opposition assemblymen.

“The party you called wretched and evil, YB Howard, is the same that engages with the opposition for the Perak state budget,” he said.

In a video shared on social media, Shahril pointed out that the Perak government rewarded RM1,000 to civil servants in the state as a sign of gratitude for their services in fighting Covid-19.

“We are open to criticism against Umno and BN in this season of state elections. We understand this, but don’t use harsh language because not only does it offend BN voters, but Malays as a whole.”

The Umno Youth deputy chair was responding to a ceramah video which was posted on JohorKini’s Facebook page, where Lee had described Umno as “parti celaka” several times.

Shahril added that at the federal level, BN had pushed for an anti-hopping law to be tabled.

“The party he called evil and damned is the same that engages with the opposition in the country’s recovery programme too.”

Shahril then turned the tables on the opposition, questioning why certain court cases that involved DAP leaders were dropped when Pakatan Harapan was in power at the federal level.

“The rocket party that considers itself clean and fragrant (‘parti harum’) uses terms like ‘court cluster’ and so on, but it forgets that when it was in power, it ignored and dropped many cases.

“Lee seems to have forgotten this too, but the facts do not lie,” he said.

Seems 'celaka' has been a fave curse word of the DAP. T'was in 2014 that another DAP man, RSN Rayer, then ADUN for Seri Delima (today he is MP for Jelutong, taking over from Jeff Ooi, then DAP but now Warisan), was reported for 'sedition' when he used the same word to insult the same UMNO, wakakaka.

Wiki says:

Rayer drew flak from UMNO-BN supporters for his controversial "UMNO celaka" (damned UMNO) remarks referring to three assemblymen who alleged that DAP instigated the May 1969 riot in a state assembly sitting in Penang State Legislative Assembly.

Following his remark, a protest was staged by Penang Perkasa Youth and several Penang UMNO members in front of the state assembly hall.[3] They stormed into the state assembly hall by crashing through the gates of the building. They have also demanded apology from R.S.N. Rayer. However, Rayer refused to apologise.[4]

Rayer was arrested in a sedition dragnet for his "UMNO celaka" remark under the Sedition Act and was charged on 27 August 2014.[5] However, the Sessions Court acquitted and discharged R.S.N. Rayer. The court held that the words that Rayer had used in reference to UMNO did not amount to sedition as alleged.[6]

'Celaka' in Malay is rather a disdainful curse cum criticism. It's polite and best not to use especially in politics but it seems non-Malay politicians (DAP) are rather fond of it, wakakaka.

  1. Condemning UMNO is tantamount to heresy in Malaysia.
