India may be a nuclear power but it has other more ... eh ... down to earth(?) problems.
Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, India’s rural development minister has instructed all chief ministers of states that village council candidates should not be allowed to stand for election unless they have a toilet at home. He urged them to set this toilet rule in law.
He said it’s a disgrace that many elected members do not even have toilet facilities in their own houses, and just defecate in the open, as is the custom for 65% of India’s rural population.
Singh averred because the people defecate in the open, virtually everywhere, generating huge amounts of excrement every day, the poo find their yucky way into water sources.
This sh*tting has been the principal cause of diarrhoea in rural areas.
He wants the al fresco sh*tting to be eradicated by 2010.
