PKR Youth leader chides PAS for acting as ‘Umno’s spokesman’

Danish Hairudin says the Islamic party took a different stance on equality in its own dealings with Umno just a few weeks ago

PKR Youth information chief Danish Hairudin reminded PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man of his statement that there is no such thing as ‘big brother’ or ‘little brother’, and that all parties should be treated as equals.

PETALING JAYA: PKR Youth information chief Danish Hairudin has hit out at PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man for defending Umno over its ultimatum for the party to either remain in the unity government or switch its support to Perikatan Nasional.

“Since when was PAS appointed as Umno’s spokesperson? Or does PAS now feel that it is bigger than Umno and can speak on Umno’s behalf?” Danish said in a statement.

He pointed out that just a few weeks ago, Tuan Ibrahim had reminded PAS and Umno during their negotiations that there should be no concept of a “big brother” or “little brother”, and that all parties should be treated as equals.

“Today, the story is different. When it comes to working with Umno, he says there should be no ‘big brother’. But when it comes to attacking PKR, suddenly Umno becomes the ‘big brother’.

“Does PAS’s politics follow principles, or does it follow the seasons?” he said.

On Aug 16, Tuan Ibrahim said any formula for cooperation between PN and Barisan Nasional for the Melaka state polls should be based on equality and should not focus solely on the allocation of state seats.

“We should not regard anyone as the big brother or little brother,” he was quoted as saying.

Yesterday, Tuan Ibrahim said PKR should not issue an ultimatum to Umno over whether it wants to remain in the unity government or switch its support to PN, as the party itself relies on Umno’s strength.

He said PKR should be mindful of its position and the number of parliamentary and state seats it holds compared with Umno before issuing warning-like statements to its partner in government.

He was commenting on a call by PKR Youth deputy chief Nabil Halimi for Umno to either fully commit to the Madani government or quit its posts in favour of PN.

Nabil issued the ultimatum after Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi suggested that the 16th general election be held earlier.
