PETALING JAYA: The Sabah fire and rescue department has confirmed that one person was killed after a house was buried in a landslide in Kampung Cenderakasih in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, this morning.

It added that four people were rescued but six more are still missing in the incident that occurred around 10am, following torrential rain since last night, Bernama reported.

“One person was found dead at the site by rescuers. We are currently in the process of determining the identity of the deceased and survivors,” a spokesman for the Sabah fire and rescue department was quoted as saying.

Earlier, it was reported that nine victims were buried by the landslide and that a search and rescue operation was ongoing.

Heavy rain in Sabah has caused floods in Penampang and Beaufort, with more than 400 people evacuated to shelters as of 8am today.

A 97-year-old man had also died after his home in Kampung Sarapung, Penampang, was hit by a landslide.

The floods have also led to electricity and water cuts due to the shutdown of power stations and water treatment plants.

The situation has prompted Sabah DAP to urge Putrajaya to cancel its planned Malaysia Day celebrations tomorrow and channel its resources to aid Sabahans affected by the ongoing “crises”.
