Summary

  • Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi has called on Muslim voters in Ayer Kuning to delay PAS’ victory.

  • He says a win for PAS does not mean a win for Islam.

AYER KUNING POLLS | Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi has presented Muslim voters in Ayer Kuning with an alternative ahead of this Saturday’s by-election.

In response to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's remarks, Puad asserted that voters should not feel compelled to delay their haj pilgrimage to cast their vote for the Islamist party.

He argued that it would be more reasonable to postpone PAS' victory in the state seat instead.

“Delaying PAS’ victory does not mean delaying the victory of Islam. Therefore, voters do not need to postpone their haj or umrah pilgrimages.

“There is no certainty that if PAS wins, Islam will prevail. Especially if PAS wins the Ayer Kuning by-election. Winning just one seat won’t change the unity government in Perak.

“It’s better to delay PAS’s victory,” Puad (above) added in a Facebook post.

Puad argued that delaying PAS' victory would also help put an end to religiously divisive politics and the reckless use of Quranic verses and hadith.

“This includes misleading political fatwas,” he added.

Furthermore, Puad claimed that PAS failed to demonstrate any significant achievements, even while in power in states like Kelantan and Terengganu.

“What has PAS actually accomplished? Delay PAS’ victory. Don’t delay haj and umrah,” he added.

Under scrutiny

During his speech in support of PN’s candidate for the by-election in Perak, Hadi stated that many Malaysian Muslims prioritise fulfilling the haj and umrah over participating in political processes that could influence national governance.

His remarks drew criticism from various quarters and are now under scrutiny by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

The April 26 by-election in Ayer Kuning will be a three-way tussle between PN’s Abd Muhaimin Malek, BN’s Yusri Bakir and PSM’s Bawani KS.

The by-election was called following the death of BN’s Ishsam Shahruddin, who won the seat in the last national polls.
