PUTRAJAYA — Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s apology for the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal is “well-received”, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister gave this short reply when asked by reporters today to comment on Najib’s apology yesterday.

“Well-received, well-received,” Anwar said outside the Surat Ar-Rahman here after Friday prayers.

Najib yesterday apologised “unreservedly” for the financial scandal that took place under his watch as prime minister and finance minister.

“It pains me every day that 1MDB happened when I was prime minister and finance minister, and I would like to apologise unreservedly,” Najib said in a statement read by his eldest son Datuk Nizar Najib in a press conference yesterday.

However, Najib also maintained his innocence, saying the recent conviction of PetroSaudi officials in Switzerland proved that he was not the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal.

Najib’s apology comes a week before his court date on Oct 30 when the bench will decide whether to call his defence in the 1MDB trial.

The former prime minister, currently in jail since August 2022 for corruption in the SRC International case, is facing four charges of abusing his position to obtain RM2.3 billion from 1MDB and 21 money laundering charges involving the same amount. – October 25, 2024
