'Eyes, skin, blood': Don corrects PAS tunnel vision with reminders

These are not patriots or vanguards of race and religion but opportunists who resort to lowbrow tactics because their ineptitude impedes them from stamping their mark in intellectual discourses, said Tajuddin Mohd Rasdi in a scathing indictment of Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria.

“They have eyes, but sadly, are unable to perceive the beauty in diversity. They have skin, but sadly, cannot feel tolerance. They have blood, but sadly, it is tainted with prejudice,” he added in a similar anatomical and haematological vein.

These irresponsible politicians, he said, are willing to exploit inconsequential issues with little consideration for the possible repercussions.

“People must not allow these charlatans to blind them with communalism or jingoism on the pretext of defending the nation, race and religion against manufactured threats,” the professor of architecture told Malaysiakini.

China flag-waving

Tajuddin (above) was commenting on Razman’s clarion call for those with similar “eyes, skin and blood” to unite after a group of Chinese nationals waved the China flag at the Guan Gong festival in Teluk Intan.

The PAS leader had sought to implicate DAP leader Nga Kor Ming but instead had a police report lodged against him for making a false accusation.

Razman subsequently organised a counter-demonstration at the iconic 140-year-old Menara Condong in Teluk Intan, which resembles a Chinese pagoda, where some 300 people raised the Jalur Gemilang.

This prompted Tajuddin to respond with a series of “reminders” to broaden Razman and PAS’ tunnel vision.

He reminded Razman that PAS claims to have tens of thousands of non-Muslim supporters whose “eyes and skin”, noted the academic, might be different from those of the average PAS leader.

“Will they be blamed for the flag-waving incident as well?” he asked.

‘Oldest mosques not in Tanah Melayu’

Reminding Razman on a subject in which PAS proclaims to be most erudite - Islam and its historical background - Tajuddin pointed out that the companions of Prophet Muhammad went to China first and one of the oldest mosques in the world is situated in the land of the dragon.

“The world’s oldest mosques are not in Tanah Melayu,” he said.

Tajuddin also felt compelled to remind the PAS leader that the oldest mosque in Malacca in Kampung Hulu was established by Chinese immigrants who embraced Islam.

“Again, those with different eyes and skin,” he added.

Tajuddin also reminded Razman of when the Chinese admiral Zheng He (Cheng Ho) sailed to Malacca during the 15th century.

“It was Zheng He, a Muslim with skin different from Razman’s, who assured China’s protection for Malacca - the seat of Malay political power - against the threat from the Siamese kingdom,” he said.

Tajuddin, for Razman’s enlightenment, reminded him of Prophet Muhammad’s final sermon, where he stated that Islam and Allah are not concerned about skin colour but rather humanity’s deeds and purity of hearts.

“The prophet said, ‘All of mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab, also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white except by piety and good action’.

“Is PAS advocating true Islam or a religion of racism and skin colour preference?” he asked.

‘Build bridges’

Yesterday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party stands with its Perak commissioner against unpatriotic provocateurs.

Razman’s divisive remarks came just a month after PAS, in an attempt to be more inclusive, amended its constitution to allow non-Muslims to become associate members.

During the last two muktamar, PAS leaders, including Tuan Ibrahim, spoke about the importance of winning the hearts and minds of non-Muslims.

Calling on the youth wing to build bridges, the deputy president claimed PAS is a victim of its adversaries’ fraudulent narrative that it is extremist.

DAP has also accused PAS of doing the same in accusing the former of being a threat to Malays and Islam.
