PETALING JAYA – Sarawak may consider the idea of introducing its own independent currency, said Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.

This, he said, was following the unpredictable economic landscape in the country.

“I am not a traitor to the country for coming up with this idea. This was something that could be considered if the less favourable economy persists,” he said as reported in Sinar Daily.

“If the Sarawak economy is good, while the national economy is not so well, perhaps Sarawak will have our own currency,” he said.

Alexander, who is secretary-general of both Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu and state ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak, said that the overall income of Sarawak and its economy has increased.

According to Sinar Daily, Nanta said this during a special podcast collaboration with Bual Studios and Reka Sounds for Merdeka and Malaysia Day titled “From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 Years” out today. – The Vibes, September 1, 2023

  1. Sarawak is little more than an oil well and a logging camp.

To be brutally honest, Sarawak contributes very little value-added GDP to Malaysia.
Let's see how long they survive with their own currency.
