Asyraf: PAS once lauded DAP for exploring the Quran

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki defended DAP central executive member Howard Lee, who has come under fire from PAS for citing the Quran.

Asyraf wrote on his Facebook page that while he had advised Lee not to use Quranic verses when discussing politics in the future, PAS once welcomed such behaviour.

"I contacted Lee and advised him not to quote Quranic verses when he is discussing politics because it can be misinterpreted for political purposes.

"(This is despite) PAS once having no issues with DAP doing so when they were allies," said Asyraf (above).

Separately, Asyraf shared an undated video clip which depicted PAS central committee member Mohd Amar Abdullah (below) delivering a speech where he lauded DAP and PKR members for "reading" the Quran.

At one point in the video, Amar referred to "Pakatan Rakyat"- indicating that the speech was delivered when DAP, PAS and PKR were part of that coalition.

‘Growing liberalism’

On Sep 22, the police revealed that an investigation against Lee was underway following reports lodged against one of his TikTok videos where he allegedly cited Surah An-Nisa verse 59, thereby insulting Islam.

Kedah PAS chief Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor immediately used the incident as material for the ongoing Pelangai by-election campaign.

Sanusi said Lee's use of the Quranic passage was a sign of "growing liberalism" and urged voters to reject the BN candidate, who is allied with DAP.

TikTok also has numerous video clips allegedly depicting non-Muslims citing verses from the Quran either during a PAS or Perikatan Nasional ceramah.

Uploaders of these video clips claim that these were examples of how PAS would cheer if their non-Muslim supporters cite the Quran, but attack non-Muslim DAP figures for doing the same.
