PETALING JAYA: Umno has not decided on whether it will work with other parties or contest alone in the Melaka state election, said its deputy president, Mohamad Hasan.

The party’s election director, who is better known as Tok Mat, said that for now, the priority was making preparations for “all possibilities” in the election.

“Let’s not expect outside help in order to win. We must build our own internal strength,” he said after holding a meeting with Melaka’s Umno machinery in Alor Gajah last night, Bernama reported.

Present at the meeting were Melaka Umno liaison committee chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh and Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

Asked about the readiness of the Melaka Perikatan Nasional (PN) to negotiate with Umno to avoid a three-cornered fight, Mohamad said it was up to the party’s state chapter to make a recommendation.

He said Melaka Umno could not make such a decision on its own, but could seek permission from the party if it wanted to cooperate with Melaka PN.

According to him, the party’s machinery at the central level had been instructed to start working to face an election.

Mohamad also said Sungai Udang assemblyman Idris Haron and Pantai Kundor assemblyman Noor Azman Hassan had been stripped of their Umno membership having shared a stage with the opposition.

He said the matter was enshrined in the amendment to the party’s constitution made at the Umno general assembly last year.

Meanwhile, Ahmad said an official letter of notification on the termination of membership will be handed to Idris and Noor Azman soon.

Yesterday, the Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Mohd Ali Rustam, agreed to dissolve the state assembly following the withdrawal of support from four assemblymen, including Idris and Noor Azman, for the Umno-led PN government.
