“Remember the Sheraton Move?”: PKR youth leader cautions Tian Chua

PKR veteran Tian Chua continues to court brickbats for his calls for the party to work with anyone who can ensure Pakatan Harapan’s win; this time within its own youth movement.

“He said that PKR should work with anyone who can ensure our victory. Perhaps, it skipped Tian Chua’s mind on what will happen if the cooperation results in us getting betrayed again.

“And I’m perplexed on how Tian Chua could have forgotten the betrayals the party suffered over the years. Is he feeling sympathetic towards his friends who orchestrated the infamous Sheraton Move?” PKR youth wing secretary Syukri Razab queried in a statement.

Yesterday, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that his party has yet to make a decision on whether to allow the four independent state assemblypersons from Melaka to run under the Pakatan Harapan’s banner in the upcoming state polls.

“The four had expressed interest but have yet to make a formal request. We don’t want to rush. We will give them time to contact us,” Malaysiakini reported the Port Dickson MP as saying.

Concurring with Anwar, PKR vice president Tian Chua said that Pakatan should be open to working with anyone who will be able to help them win the state polls.

“Tactically, we must join with anyone that can give Pakatan victory. It is a tactic we must consider by any means to win the most seats,” the former Batu MP was reported saying.

It is to note that the two of them, Pengkalan Batu assemblyperson Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent) and Telok Mas assemblyperson Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu) were instrumental in dislodging the Pakatan administration in Melaka back last year.

Value based politics a must

On that note, Syukri said that one should not take Tian Chua’s statement lightly as the latter was a veteran leader of the party but stressed it was his personal opinion, not PKR’s officials stand.

However, the youth leader cautioned against adopting Machiavellian politics as it could backfire on the party itself.

“Perhaps, Tian Chua is too engrossed with the ‘cartel’ type of politics that he could not understand the people’s sentiments.

“Attaining power alone should not be the primary aim of our struggle. Politics based on the right values also matter and the people will not forgive us if we continue putting ourselves at risk of getting stabbed in the back.

“With utmost humility, I urge our senior leader Tian Chua not to make such statements again which would only tarnish PKR’s image among the voters,” Syukri concluded.

On related matter, Otai Reformasi secretary Abdul Razak Ismail said that taking the quartet into Pakatan would undermine the memorandum of understating (MoU) signed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“How do we get rid off the ‘frog culture’ when our leaders keep embracing these characters? Have you not learnt anything from past mistakes? Never take in these dubious characters,” he told FocusM.

On Tian Chua’s statement, Razak reminisced the past when the former was one of the Pakatan leaders instrumental in bringing Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad into the coalition.

“Otai Reformasi was against it but no one heard us. Look at what happened last year. That’s why I strongly suggest our PKR leadership not take advise from Tian Chua.

“As far as the Melaka quartet in concerned, we don’t need them. Remember that Norhizam called his own former DAP colleagues ‘babi’ in the Melaka state assembly several times.

“If PKR allows him to contest under its ticket, the Chinese community will not accept it. Let Norhizam contest as an independent if he thinks greatly of himself,” Razak retorted. – Oct 21, 2021
