Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh says the move is necessary to allow an investigation into allegations the attorney-general had abused his powers

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said although former prime minister Najib Razak had committed an offence and served his sentence, the rights accorded to him under the royal pardon must be respected.
JASIN: Umno and PAS’s youth wings will lodge police reports nationwide against Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar over a suggestion to defer Najib Razak’s house arrest pending a review of the conditional pardon and the High Court’s Order of Discharge.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said the move was necessary to allow an investigation into allegations that Dusuki had abused his powers.
“That is why we believe this matter cannot be allowed to go unchallenged. I have discussed this with my (PAS) counterpart, and we will mobilise party members nationwide to lodge police reports against the AG,” he said after attending a campaign programme in the Merlimau state constituency.
Earlier today, Istana Negara said any action challenging the conditional pardon order allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest would amount to defying the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s authority.
Akmal also questioned how long the AG had taken to seek legal clarification on the order for Najib’s conditional pardon, which he said was issued on Sept 18.
“How much more time does he need to obtain such clarification? This is what we want investigated. If there has been an abuse of power, we cannot simply let it go,” he said.
Akmal said Najib was entitled to serve his sentence under house arrest following the full payment of the RM50 million fine.
He said that although Najib had committed an offence and served his sentence, the rights accorded to him under the royal pardon must be respected.
In a separate statement, Umno called for stern action against those who defied the conditional pardon order granted to Najib.
“Malaysia cannot be allowed to be governed and administered by those who clearly disregard the provisions enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” it said, referring to the king’s royal prerogative to grant pardons.
Yesterday, Umno announced that it had settled the RM50 million fine imposed on its former president after raising funds through a donation drive.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court subsequently issued an Order for Discharge after the payment was recorded.
However, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said the implementation of the house arrest order should be deferred temporarily to allow it to examine legal questions relating to the pardon order and the implications of the court order.
