PETALING JAYA: Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan) president Hamzah Zainudin has confirmed that the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has approved the party’s amendments to its name, logo and constitution.

He said the approval, which took effect on July 6, was communicated in an official letter dated July 7 from RoS director-general Zulfikar Ahmad.

He said the approval covered four matters: the party’s change of name, change of address and constitutional amendments under Section 11 of the Societies Act 1966, as well as permission to use its flag and logo under Section 50 of the same Act.

“What we used previously was based on the decision made at the party’s extraordinary general meeting. It was not wrong, but we now have official confirmation,” he said at a press conference after a meeting of the party’s Supreme Council today.

Hamzah also said the number of early registrations for party membership would be announced on Aug 2.

Previously, Wawasan vice-president Huan Cheng Guan said the party was a rebranded version of the Penang-based Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM), with the transition agreed upon months ago and not involving any financial transactions.

Huan, who co-founded PCM in 2009, said the takeover by Hamzah and his allies had received unanimous backing from the party’s senior leadership, driven by PCM’s inability to gain political traction despite having existed for 16 years.

Separately, Hamzah said Wawasan’s participation in the Negeri Sembilan polls would be decided at an official meeting with Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) central leadership.

He said the meeting will look into the number of seats Wawasan will contest, as well as the candidates it will field.

“We have already started discussions with them, but I cannot make any confirmation until after the real meeting with PN.

“I do not wish to make an announcement prematurely without obtaining the joint committee’s official agreement and consensus,” he said.

Aug 1 has been fixed as polling day for the Negeri Sembilan election, with nominations on July 18 and early voting set for July 28.
