Why Lockerbie really occurred

UK's most deadly terror atrocity [occurred] when a bomb in the hold of ... flight Pan Am 103 exploded above the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

It killed 270 people from 21 countries, including 11 people on the ground, and this devastating event has now been dramatised in an upcoming BBC drama series, The Bombing of Pan Am 103.

We knew that Libya and even the PLO were blamed - in fact, several days before the bombing, the PLO warned European security forces that extremists might launch terrorist attacks to undermine the then-ongoing dialogue between the United States and the PLO - but very few realised that it was the Iranians who were responsible, bombing Pan Am 103 in RETALIATION for the US Navy's shooting down of an Iranian Airline, Flight 655.

The Wanks eventually knew it was Iran who was responsible but their authorities chose to act dunno and wrongly blamed Libya so they could show their voters they took revenge on a "much-weaker" and more-push-able Libya.

Wiki said: In 2003, under pressure from international sanctions, Muammar Gaddafi took responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing, as leader of his government, and paid compensation to the victims' families, while maintaining that he personally had not ordered the attack.

Iran Air Flight 655^[a] was a scheduled passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai via Bandar Abbas that was shot down on 3 July 1988 by two surface-to-air missiles fired by USS Vincennes, a United States Navy warship. The missiles hit the Iran Air aircraft, an Airbus A300, while it was flying its usual route over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, shortly after the flight departed its stopover location, Bandar Abbas International Airport. All 290 people on board were killed, making it one of the deadliest airliner shootdowns of all time and the deadliest in Iranian history. The shootdown occurred during the Iran–Iraq War, which had been ongoing for nearly eight years. Vincennes had entered Iranian territorial waters after one of its helicopters drew warning fire from Iranian speedboats operating within Iranian territorial limits.

The reason for the downing has been disputed between the governments of the two countries. According to the United States, Vincennes's crew misidentified the aircraft as an F-14 Tomcat, a US-made fighter jet part of the Iranian inventory, despite it transmitting civilian identification codes. They assert that Vincennes and other warships repeatedly contacted the aircraft on both civilian and military air distress frequencies, but received no response. Bandar Abbas acted as a joint civil/military airport, and Flight 655 had departed behind schedule. The Iranian government maintains that the US recklessly shot down the aircraft, violating international law, after repeatedly provoking the Iranian forces. Some analysts blamed the overly aggressive attitude of Vincennes's captain, William C. Rogers III, while others focused on more widespread issues and miscommunications on board.

Wankie Navy shot Iranian Air Flight 655 on 03 June 1988. On 21 December 1988, slightly over 6 months since Iran lost its Airbus, Pam Am 103 was bombed over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. Libya was blamed - Kautim for Wanks and Iran - tough luck for Gaddafi.
