Summary

  • PKR postpones its central leadership nominations but did not give any reason.

  • This comes amid rising discontent in the party following controversial divisional election results.

PKR has postponed nominations for its central leadership election to May 8 and 9.

In a statement on social media, the party’s central election committee chairperson Dr Zaliha Mustafa did not give any reasons for the postponement.

“Please be informed that the central election committee has decided to postpone the central level election nominations 2025 that were scheduled for May 3 and 4.

“The new date for central level nominations will take place on May 8, starting at 12am until May 9 at 11.59pm.

“The entire process will be conducted online,” Zaliha said.

Winds against Rafizi

Discontent has been rising within PKR, following divisional election results that played out against party deputy president and Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli’s camp.

Several of Rafizi’s key leaders lost in the divisional polls, indicating the difficult road ahead for the Pandan MP as he prepares to defend his position at the central leadership election.

Since then, a minister had anonymously told Malaysiakini that Rafizi has “gone on leave” for a few days.

Among the prominent losers were Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim.

Some candidates have filed complaints, questioning the integrity of the voting system and alleging the presence of an “invisible hand” meddling in the results.

At the same time, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the party’s president, confirmed that independent auditors have been appointed to address complaints of irregularities in the party polls.

However, the operator of the e-voting system in the PKR election has denied allegations of irregularities in the divisional polls.

In the wake of these issues, PKR’s central leadership council convened on April 23 and was believed to have discussed concerns surrounding the divisional polls.

With PKR’s central leadership posts up for grabs, there are also rumours of an impending cabinet reshuffle, given that Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz will complete his final tenure as a senator in December.

Both Anwar and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke have ruled out a reshuffle.

Before DAP’s party leadership election in March, Loke said the cabinet line-up would remain unchanged regardless of the results of his party’s election.
