Summary

  • Nurul Izzah Anwar vows to confront her father, Anwar Ibrahim, about MACC chief Azam Baki’s third contract extension if elected as PKR deputy president.

  • She has previously criticised the extension as an ‘unwelcome’ decision.

PKR deputy president aspirant Nurul Izzah Anwar reiterated her disagreement with the government’s decision to extend MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s contract for the third time.

She vowed to confront her father, Prime Minister and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, on the matter if elected.

“I will speak (about Azam) within the party’s scope,” she told the media after a programme with party members in Kuala Lumpur last night.

Also present was PKR vice-president and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

Previously, Nurul Izzah had criticised the reappointment of Azam as an “unwelcome” decision.

“The party (PKR) needs to stand for reforms - and we require the support of the rakyat and our members to do this.

“We ask brave and courageous civil servants and personalities to rise to the occasion,” she had said.

‘We were afraid but fought anyway’

In her speech last night, Nurul Izzah reminisced about PKR’s struggle, which began in Kuala Lumpur after her father was sacked from the government in 1998, sparking the reformasi movement.

Nurul Izzah, who was dubbed the “princess of reformasi”, also recalled her own start in politics when she was fielded as PKR’s candidate for the Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency to challenge then-incumbent Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

She admitted that it was daunting to go up against Shahrizat, whom she defeated, as the then Wanita Umno leader was an influential figure.

“I remember at the time, it was fated that I would contest in an area where PKR had never won before - Lembah Pantai.

“To say I wasn’t scared, brothers and sisters, is untrue… but we fought anyway because that’s part of the process,” she added.

Why wait until you win the DP PKR post before you would tell your dad about the undesirability of extending Azam Baki's service as MACC Head - why not do it now, or even yesterday?

And are you saying you'll abandon this job if you do not win the DP PKR post?
