KUALA LUMPUR — Nurul Izzah Anwar is believed to be leading the contest for Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) deputy presidency, according to senior party insiders, potentially unseating incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli in what could be a major shift within the party’s leadership.

Unofficial results cited by local media suggest that Nurul Izzah, currently a PKR vice-president and daughter of party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has secured a commanding lead. As of 7.15pm, she is said to have received 9,803 votes, far ahead of Rafizi’s 3,866.

“This signals a new wave in the party’s leadership direction ahead of the next general election,” a senior party source was quoted as saying.

If confirmed, the outcome would mark a political comeback for Nurul Izzah, who previously served as vice-president before stepping back from active politics in 2018, and later returning to the party’s top leadership.

In the race for the party’s vice-presidency, early indications show Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari taking the top spot, followed by Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang and Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun are also expected to retain their positions within the party leadership.

The official results are expected to be announced soon by the party’s Central Election Committee (JPP). — May 23, 2025
