Summary

  • Titiwangsa PKR division chief Syed Badli Shah Syed Osman urges PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli to make way for Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to assume the position.

  • He says that as a long-time leader, Saifuddin’s ascension to the post would help boost public support for the party and strengthen the coalition government.

  • Badli also urges Rafizi to address speculation over his purported resignation from the cabinet.

A PKR leader has urged party deputy president Rafizi Ramli to make way for Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to assume the position.

“I urge the party to give Saifuddin an easy path to become PKR deputy president, which would also protect the party’s image at one go.

“As a senior leader who has been with PKR since its ups and downs, I think it’s time he is given the post to help (party president) Anwar Ibrahim.

“And I’m confident that a compromise between both great leaders will boost public support for the party and stabilise PKR’s internal politics,” said Titiwangsa PKR division chief Syed Badli Shah Syed Osman in a statement today.

Yesterday, Saifuddin (above), who is also Pakatan Harapan secretary-general, said he will be making “an official announcement within a reasonable time” on his future in PKR.

This comes after several meetings with Anwar and Rafizi.

“In the four days remaining before the nomination deadline (for the PKR central leadership election), I will continue to make the best considerations with trust in God and prayer.

“God willing, I will make an official announcement within a reasonable time,” the home minister added.

Come clean over ‘resignation’

On that note, Syed Badli also urged Rafizi to come clean over speculations that he had quit as the economy minister.

He added that Rafizi should not allow the issue to become a polemic as it was creating unease within PKR and the coalition government.

“Rafizi should not be leaving such trivial matters for Anwar to handle, as the latter needs to focus on efforts to strengthen the government and the economy,” said the former aide to ex-deputy prime minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

In a separate statement, leaders from the Semporna Wanita PKR division expressed their backing for the proposal to allow Saifuddin to claim the party’s deputy presidency uncontested.

Besides citing Saifuddin’s consistent dedication to the party’s struggles, the division’s deputy chief Melati Hasaman and vice-chief Rosalina Mustafa, said Rafizi’s decision to take an extended leave recently has “left an impact” on the public.

They also asserted that Rafizi’s role as the economy minister in charge of a “demanding” portfolio makes it difficult for him to focus on party affairs.

“PKR needs a deputy president who understands grassroots aspirations, is people-friendly, and not arrogant,” the duo added.

On April 30, a minister anonymously said Rafizi is on leave amid rumours about the PKR deputy president’s resignation from his government post.

“Anwar informed today’s cabinet meeting that Rafizi is on leave for a few days. There has been no resignation, and these rumours are entirely false,” the minister had said.

The prime minister also downplayed the matter, saying it was a non-issue.

“Just a few days off, no issue at all. I also want to find a few days off,” Anwar added.

Sources have since confirmed with Malaysiakini that Rafizi resumed his duties today.
