Summary

  • The Malaysian Medical Association has submitted a notice to the Putrajaya police on their plan to hold a protest next week.

  • The group representing medical doctors plans to march to the Prime Minister’s Office to show frustration after Putrajaya allegedly started enforcing a directive compelling all private clinics to display drug prices.

  • Putrajaya police say they will process the notice and hold a discussion with the rally organiser.

Police have received a notice from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) on their plan to hold a protest against the drug price display law this Tuesday.

According to Putrajaya district police chief Aidi Sham Mohamed, they will study and process the notice according to the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

“We will also call the organiser for a discussion, which is part of the process,” he told Malaysiakini.

Asked if the police have decided to facilitate the rally, which is planned to begin at the Health Ministry before marching to the Prime Minister’s Office, Aidi said they are still looking into the matter.

It was reported that MMA is organising the demonstration to protest Putrajaya’s alleged move to enforce a new directive, which requires private health care facilities to display drug prices.

The order - to be jointly enforced by the Health Ministry and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry - requires clinics to display the price of medication, including those behind counters, either in a physical or digital list.

MMA president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira had claimed that in a meeting with health practitioners in February, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad pledged that the price transparency would only be implemented after general practitioners’ fees are reviewed.

“Unfortunately and sadly, this commitment has not been honoured,” he reportedly said.
