Summary
- Shamsul Iskandar Akin leads five out of six Malacca PKR divisions in declaring their support for Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest for the party’s deputy presidency.
- The senior aide to the prime minister says Nurul Izzah has what it takes to lead the party into the future.
- He is the latest among several PKR leaders to throw their support behind the former Permatang Pauh MP.
A senior aide to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is leading calls of support from five out of six Malacca PKR divisions for party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar to rise up and contest the party deputy president’s post.
PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Akin, who is also PKR Hang Tuah Jaya chief, in a joint statement endorsed by the Alor Gajah, Tangga Batu, Jasin, and Kota Melaka division chiefs, declared support for Nurul Izzah to challenge incumbent PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli.
“Today, as we face an increasingly challenging and complex future, PKR must continue to strengthen its leadership ranks - not only with those who understand the party’s historical struggle but who are also capable of advancing reformist values, driving change, and translating the people’s aspirations more effectively.

“In line with this, and with full awareness and responsibility toward the mandate of this struggle, we declare our open support and full confidence in Nurul Izzah as a candidate for the position of PKR deputy president for the 2025-2028 term,” said the state leaders.
‘Bridging the old and new’
The joint statement today follows an initial endorsement by Perak PKR information chief Azam Afandi, echoing a stand that support for Nurul Izzah, Anwar’s eldest daughter, goes beyond personality or political legacy.
“It is about the future of PKR as a progressive political party that continues to earn the people’s trust.
“In today’s dynamic political landscape, we need leaders who can serve as a bridge between the founding generation and the new generation - a leader who embodies moderation, principled values, progressiveness, and vision,” he said.
“We are confident that Nurul Izzah possesses all these leadership qualities.
“She is capable of breathing new life into PKR, strengthening synergy with partners in the unity government, and continuing to carry the torch of struggle toward a fairer, more stable, and inclusive nation,” they added.
‘Essential traits to revitalise party’
Echoing Malacca PKR’s endorsement of Nurul Izzah, the party’s Pahang chief said the state chapter is also backing her for the deputy presidency.
Pahang PKR chief Rizal Jamin, who lost his post as Lipis division chief during the recent divisional party election, said PKR must be inherited by a new generation of energetic and forward-looking leaders.

“I believe Nurul Izzah possesses the values of moderation, principled resolve, and a progressive mindset, which are essential criteria to revitalise a party,” he added in a statement today.
Meanwhile, former Kuala Langat MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid became the first PKR supreme council member to declare support for Nurul Izzah.
In a statement, Abdullah, who lost his bid for the Kapar PKR chief position, said Nurul Izzah has emerged as a leader capable of being an icon of change for the party.
“I believe the leadership duo of Anwar as president and Nurul Izzah as deputy president will form a strong, progressive team, inspiring confidence in the people to continue the long-fought-for reform agenda,” he said.
From PKR Women’s Wing, its deputy chief Faizah Ariffin also voiced support for Nurul Izzah, pointing out that no woman has occupied the position before.
Others who have since voiced their support include Selangor PKR Youth chief and Kota Damansara assemblyperson Izuan Kasim.
Nurul Izzah, who sat out of the 2022 party polls but was later appointed as vice-president, has previously announced her intention to contest her current position.
Her name has emerged today as a possible contender for the deputy presidency ahead of central election nominations on May 8 and May 9.
So far, no candidate has publicly announced a bid to challenge Rafizi, but Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail admitted to meetings with the economy minister and Anwar to discuss his future in the party.
