Summary

  • Lawyer Liyana Marzuki urges Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari to highlight the case of a tahfiz school student found dead in a toilet stall 13 years ago.

  • Liyana says the case should not be ignored simply because there is no political gain.

A lawyer representing family members of a tahfiz student found dead in his school’s toilet 13 years ago has urged Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari to assist in the fight for justice.

In making her call, lawyer Liyana Marzuki drew parallels between little support for the late student, Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, and movements rallying to seek justice for the late firefighter Adib Kassim.

“P/S - I urge Fadhli to fight for the late Wan Faris (above) and his parents, just as PAS fought for the late Adib.

“Do not let this case be ignored simply because there’s no political gain to be had,” she said at the end of a Facebook post titled “post-mortem” that recapped incidents surrounding the student’s death and subsequent developments.

Her jab at Fadhli was made based on the PAS leader’s role in supporting the “Justice For Adib” movement and raising issues related to the firefighter’s death on various subsequent election campaign trails.

Adib died from injuries sustained during riots near the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya, Selangor, in November 2018.

Liyana recounted how the tahfiz student’s death was initially suspected to be from a suicide based on the initial discovery, after a hostel warden noticed a foul odour coming from a locked toilet stall at Maahad Tahfiz Sains Kok Lanas.

“The estimated time of death was four days prior, based on the presence of larvae and flies in the body.

“During those four days, no one had checked on him or wondered where he had gone,” she said.

Liyana said both the initial investigating officer and the doctor who conducted the post-mortem had, during a subsequent inquest, maintained the death to be from suicide, despite many questions raised based on the circumstances of the student’s death.

“His mother Rohani told me that her heart shattered when she first saw her son’s lifeless body - and then to have people claim he had taken his own life was a further injustice.

“As she cradled his head, grains of sand fell from his scalp.

“She believes her son was killed on the school field and later hung in the toilet as part of a cover-up - to protect the killer, someone she called ‘a devil in disguise’,” said Liyana, referring to Rohani Hussin, a retired nurse from Kota Bharu.

Preparing lawsuit

It was reported that the Kota Bharu Coroners Court in June 2016 ruled that Wan Faris’ death was due to the actions of unidentified individuals and rejected the possibility of suicide.

Last Saturday, Sinar Harian reported that various attempts by the student’s family to demand action based on the inquest findings had failed, and the case had been classified as “No Further Action” since 2020.

Rohani said the family is preparing to file a lawsuit against yet-to-be-identified individuals and demand a reinvestigation of Wan Faris’ death.

“His parents have waited 12 years. He awaits justice in the afterlife.

“Let us pray that the time for justice has finally come, after so many years of waiting.

“May the killer be unable to sleep easily, for Allah’s promise is certain. The truth will side with the wronged,” said Liyana.

It was reported that the lawsuit will also seek compensation for alleged negligence in previous investigations.
