PETALING JAYA: Former Perak menteri besar Ramli Ngah Talib is set to receive his letter of appointment as the next Penang governor tomorrow, according to a report.
Sinar Harian quoted a source as saying that Ramli, the seventh Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, will receive the letter at a ceremony before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim at Istana Negara tomorrow.
A highly-placed source familiar with the matter told FMT that Ramli’s appointment had been “more or less firmed up about a month ago”.
“The state is now making arrangements for the swearing-in of the new governor, as we speak. We are expecting a swearing-in by this week or May 1,” the source said.
There was speculation in March that the Umno man would be appointed to the post, following reports that present governor Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak might not have his term extended and could be replaced by a non-Penangite.
Fuzi’s tenure ends on April 30.
Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow had responded to the speculation by saying that a non-Penangite could be appointed to the post as the state constitution did not specify that the governor had to be from Penang.
Chow also said the appointment of the governor was at the Agong’s discretion, with the state government merely providing a list of proposed names to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Ramli served as Perak’s eighth menteri besar from 1983 to 1999. He was the Kampong Gajah assemblyman from 1978 to 1999, before serving as Pasir Salak MP from 1999 to 2008.

I thot Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang would have been a great Governor. He deserves it and is same age 84. Never mind, in future Guanee can be a candidate.
