PETALING JAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia has brushed off the loss suffered by its candidate, KS Bawani at the Ayer Kuning by-election today, by pointing to the increase in votes she obtained.

“We weren’t beaten, but we were supported by more voters compared to the 2022 general election,” the party said in a social media post.

“Let’s move forward and build a third force,” it said after Barisan Nasional candidate Yusri Bakir was declared the winner with 11,065 votes.

Bawani secured 1,106 votes tonight, almost double the 586 votes cast in the 2022 general election, when she was involved in a five-cornered fight.

Today’s by-election involved only BN, Perikatan Nasional and PSM whereas the 2022 contest also involved Pakatan Harapan, which obtained the second-highest number of votes.

Earlier this month, Urimai chairman P Ramasamy, whose party campaigned for PSM, said the votes cast for PSM would be “a clear signal of growing dissatisfaction among the subaltern classes towards a government perceived to be serving the interests of the elite and well-connected”.

BN retained the seat tonight with a 5006-vote majority, more than double that it obtained in 2022 by Ishsam Shahruddin. His death in February triggered the by-election.
