Summary
- Hassan Abdul Karim claims prominent PKR leaders lost in the party’s divisional polls because of their arrogance and for turning into elitists after coming to power.
- The Pasir Gudang MP also takes a jab at PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli’s camp, saying the party’s grassroots have rejected their cartel politics.
PKR veteran Hassan Abdul Karim has rubbed salt into the wound of prominent party leaders recently ousted in its divisional polls, saying some of them deserved the axe for their arrogance.
He claimed the results show the party grassroots’ rejection of political elitists and “cartel politics” in PKR, particularly those who were part of the “Ayuh Malaysia” movement led by the party’s deputy president, Rafizi Ramli.
“This is my conclusion when many leaders who won during the PKR elections in 2022 under the Ayuh Malaysia platform, which tried to oust (president) Anwar Ibrahim, were defeated during this round.
“They lost to ordinary party members who are not well known, who are not ministers, deputy ministers, or even MPs,” he said in a statement.

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli
Among prominent figures known to be Rafizi’s allies who lost to ordinary members were PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who lost the Setiawangsa divisional chief position, Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasrullah Nasir (Johor Bahru) and Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail (Shah Alam).
Rawang assemblyperson Chua Wei Kiat (Selayang) and Sabah state minister Christina Liew (Kota Kinabalu) also lost.
Grassroots punish ‘elitists’
Hassan said certain PKR leaders have become “elitists” and abandoned their supporters after they got into positions of power.
“Some of these leaders became ministers and deputy ministers, or MPs, and all of a sudden, they acted like they were elitists after they entered the corridors of power in Putrajaya.
“They were difficult to reach, no longer friendly with ordinary PKR members who helped put up their posters during the general election.
“They no longer visited their constituency, they did not recognise their own party members, or entertained any calls or WhatsApp messages from supporters,” he said, adding that some even exited WhatsApp groups with ordinary members.
As such, the PKR lawmaker said party members have taught these important figures a lesson by punishing them through the democratic process in the PKR polls.
