Astro comes under fire for “not being serious” in its apology to Hindus over Thaipusam gaffe

WITH its stocks currently trading at an all-time low, financially-crippled Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd has been dealt another reputational blow with an outrage over its “pathetic apology” following the mocking of the sacred Hindu Kavadi ritual by its ERA FM radio presenters.

Despite the media and entertainment outfit having “rested” the three culprits – Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin and Radin – pending an internal probe over the insensitive “Vel, Vel” chant posting on the social media platforms of the Malay language radio station, netizens have deemed its apology as “half-hearted” at best.

Such is an overview of brickbats hurled at Astro in a X posting by Malaysiakini journalist Hariz Mohd (@HarizMohdWrites) which has fetched almost one million views at the time of writing.

One netizen berated the apology as being “vague-sounding” for its failed to seek forgiveness from Malaysian Hindus but instead directed at “some aggrieved party vaguely described as pihak terlibat (party involved)”.

Another detected ‘shoddy workmanship’ as Astro even erred on the date of its so-called “apology letter”. “No wonder videos like that can be missed. Even if you write a letter, the date is wrong,” fumed the commenter.

“It’s like Astro has a small team. Can’t anyone please check this letter before having it publicised?”

One commenter wondered with eight people in the studio with two filming the video, why couldn’t one of them at least ticked off such display of insensitivity.

“Would an apology be accepted if supposedly the Indians or Chinese have shot similar videos mocking Islamic beliefs?” he chastised.

Another commenter was so enraged that he suggested the trio be “rested permanently” by ERA FM while finfluencer Azha Investing (@azha_investing) asked if the radio station should be suspended from broadcasting (pending the internal probe).

One commenter hit the nail on the head when he lamented the trend of radio stations “hiring comedians as deejays these days”. “Lastly, you end up getting stupid jokes. Serve you right,” he cheekily pointed out. – March 5, 2025
