Hassan criticises SUHAKAM’s silence on Firdaus’ remarks about converting minors

PASIR Gudang MP Hassan Karim has criticised the national human rights commission (SUHAKAM) for its apparent silence on a controversy involving Muslim convert preacher Firdaus Wong, who allegedly advised on handling requests from minors wishing to secretly convert to Islam.

Addressing the Dewan Rakyat, Hassan expressed his concern over SUHAKAM’s lack of response to issues of racial discrimination and religious freedom.

“Why wasn’t there any response from SUHAKAM regarding this issue (involving Firdaus)? Suhakam would surely be aware that religious freedom is the universal right of all Malaysians, whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims,” said the PKR MP.

Hassan pointed out that SUHAKAM needed to take more responsibility in addressing human rights issues. He added that as a Muslim, he found Firdaus’s remarks particularly troubling.

“His actions have caused concern and alarm among non-Muslims in Malaysia.”

Moreover, Firdaus is currently under investigation after a video of him allegedly instructing a man on how to manage requests from minors to secretly convert to Islam went viral.

The independent preacher is also accused of advising children on how to pray in secret and conceal their conversion from their parents.

Furthermore, lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan highlighted that Firdaus had essentially confessed to converting minors, claiming experience in handling such cases.

Firdaus is being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for making statements with the intent to incite hatred.

According to Petaling Jaya police chief Shahrulnizam Jaafar, four police reports have been lodged against the preacher, and statements from three individuals have been recorded. – June 27, 2024

  1. Suhakam has been warned by powers that be not to wade into controversies touching on Islam.
Up to Suhakam to accede or ignore it
