How much did govt spend on Padu, asks Gerakan
Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong questions inconsistency in statements regarding the cost of setting it up.
PETALING JAYA: Gerakan has urged the government to reveal how much it spent on the central database hub (Padu) and its registration campaign.
In a statement, Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong asked the government how much it had spent on publicity and setting up Padu registration counters over the past three months.
He also questioned the inconsistency in statements regarding the cost of setting up Padu.
“Before this, economy minister Rafizi Ramli said it doesn’t require a lot of funds, and that about RM2 million would be needed for the hardware.
“But (MCA president and Ayer Hitam MP) Wee Ka Siong said it has cost a total of RM80 million. Please explain this,” Oh said.
In a Facebook post last week, Wee said Putrajaya had allocated RM80 million to set up the Padu system, describing it as “not cheap”.
In December, however, Rafizi said the government had “pinched from here and there” in its 2023 and 2024 federal budgets to fund the establishment of Padu.
The minister said Putrajaya did not have to allocate additional funds as it was set up for free, with “about RM2 million” needed for its hardware.
