Kok wants Jamal declared bankrupt over non-payment of damages

Teresa Kok won her defamation suit against Jamal Yunos with the High Court ordering him to pay RM300,000 in damages and RM50,000 in costs.

PETALING JAYA: Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has filed a bankruptcy notice against Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos after he failed to settle RM300,000 in damages following her win in a defamation suit against him.

She said her lawyers SN Nair and Jaden Phoon filed the notice as Jamal still has not complied with the High Court’s decision delivered on July 26.

“Until today, I have not received anything from him,” she said, adding that the total sum Jamal owed her now is RM351,479.45, including accrued interest.

In July, judicial commissioner Arief Emran Arifin ruled that Jamal was liable for defaming Kok during a press conference on March 8, 2017 and ordered him to pay her RM300,000 in general, aggravated, and exemplary damages. The court also ordered Jamal to pay RM50,000 in costs to Kok.

Kok filed the suit against Jamal in 2017 after he accused her of misappropriating Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor funds under the state government’s Skim Mesra Usia Emas initiative.

She contended that Jamal’s remarks gave an impression that she had used state funds for herself and was, therefore, an unethical person.

Kok had said the court’s ruling had vindicated her. She pointed out that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission launched a probe against her after Jamal lodged a report.

Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia reported earlier today that Jamal was rushed to the Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur after he fainted at a Barisan Nasional event in Sungai Besar last night.

His son, Amin Daniel, was quoted as saying that Jamal has been placed under observation.

  1. Hahahaha....no money to pay, don't play play...
he could have admitted fault, apologised and settled much earlier without going to a full trial.
