Unilateral conversion: Federal Court ruling applies across M’sia, netizens berate Wan Junaidi

Ta'ada guli kah?

WITH single mother Loh Siew Hong taking on the Perlis religious authorities for unilaterally converting her children, netizens took to social media to pour scorn at Law Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar for apparently trying to wash his hands of the matter.

Reprimanding her own ally, UMNO MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said reminded Wan Junaidi of the Federal Court ruling that children can only be converted with consent from both parents.

Echoing Azalina’s sentiments, former Bar Council president S Ambiga added:

Yesterday, Wan Junaidi urged Low to seek court’s intervention on the case of her children being unilaterally converted by her father, in the absence of her mother.

“As for as I know, the court is the best arbitration process for this. The people can take this matter to court and decide on the matter,” Free Malaysia Today reported the Santubong MP as saying.

The lawmaker said this following Perlis mufti’s insistence that the state laws permit one parent’s consent to convert their children to Islam, following their father’s wishes.

It is to note that in 2018, the Federal Court, in a unanimous ruling, quashed kindergarten teacher Indira Gandhi’s three children’s conversion to Islam and ordered all her children to be returned to the mother.

The apex court also ruled that in the case of conversion, both parents must consent to it instead of only one.

However, the police have yet to locate Indira Gandhi youngest child until today despite the Federal Court’s ruling.

It is to note that in Malaysia, the Federal Constitution supersedes all other laws in the country, with the Federal Court’s decision acted upon across the country.

Clueless and uncivilised

On that note, other users took to social media to berate Wan Junaidi as well, calling him an incompetent minister who is just looking for his political survival.

User Tk Meng stated:

However, netizen Clarence lashed out at Azalina as well, questioning her on what she was doing about it given that she serves as the Prime Minister’s human rights adviser. – Feb 19, 2022

  1. All 100% of Melayu I have spoken to consider a conversion valid as long as it follows the rules laud out in Syariah.

The Federal Court decision is ultra vires to Syaria and tak boleh pakai.

    Syaria is Supreme

What an idiot!!! But I suppose it is a strategy to put road blocks for Mdm Loh to navigate.
