A. Ganapathy succumbed to injuries allegedly inflicted on him while in police custody

FMT:

Order inquest into death of man in custody, Lim tells Takiyuddin

A Ganapathy died after spending more than a month in ICU following his arrest by police.

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has urged de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan to order an inquest into the custodial death of a police detainee.

This follows reports that a post-mortem found that A Ganapathy died of severe injuries on his legs and shoulders.

In a statement today, Lim said Takiyuddin and the Perikatan Nasional government must act immediately against those responsible for the 40-year-old’s death.

“Takiyuddin cannot remain silent, just as he is silent now on the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim,” said the former finance minister

It was reported earlier today that a doctor from Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s pathology department had confirmed Ganapathy had succumbed to the injuries allegedly inflicted on him.

Ganesh Kanagaretnam, the family’s lawyer, said the post-mortem took eight hours on the day of Ganapathy’s death, and the family has yet to receive the full autopsy report.

Ganapathy was said to have spent 12 days in police custody from Feb 24 before being admitted to hospital. He succumbed to his injuries last week after spending over a month at the Selayang Hospital’s intensive care unit.

The family claimed that his health deteriorated while in police custody and that his leg was swollen and bruised, “which suggested that he had been beaten”.

MIC vice-president C Sivarraajh had previously called on the home ministry to conduct an inquiry into Ganapathy’s death and also to speed up the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

Be a good boy, behave yourself and keep quiet, just like Wee KHAT Siong.
