Puad says the leak of minister’s recording is ‘concerning’

Umno’s Mohd Puad Zarkashi has raised questions about privacy and snooping after a recording of a man who sounded like home minister Hamzah Zainudin was posted on several blogs.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi today raised concerns over the country’s security after a purported recording of a minister talking about the reshuffle in the police force had gone viral.

Puad claimed the person recorded sounded like home minister Hamzah Zainudin talking about promotions and the change of roles in the police force.

“If the home minister’s conversation can be recorded, then is Malaysia safe? It is not about who recorded it or whether it is legitimate, but the question is: the details in the conversation, is it a scandal?” he asked in a Facebook post today.

Puad said a thorough investigation was necessary and Hamzah might have to lodge a police report beforehand.

“But who has the power to order an immediate investigation, the home minister or the inspector-general of police?

“Is there going to be a big war, with exposés and conflicts that might reduce the country’s confidence in the Perikatan Nasional government?” he asked.

In the recording, which was posted on several blogs, a man was heard discussing giving a Perakian a promotion, plausibly for a police role. The man was also heard saying that another person should no longer decide on the appointment of state police chiefs but could only nominate five names.

FMT has contacted Hamzah and the IGP for comment.

Not in the least surprised at all, considering a then-PM was recorded in his private conversation with his wife and some officials. Yes, even a (then) PM could be electronically eavesdropped, and our SB and National Security people are supposed to be the best, so what's more for a Home Minister.

Th sad politicised part of Najib's private conversation with Rosmah and other officials being tape was exploited to its full, with then MACC Director releasing said tape in court as evidence against the allegation Rosmah had a controlling say in the PM's job - even then, t'was a long bow.

The veracity of that Najib-Rosmah recording was not even checked (unlike Ass-binte's alleged gay sex video clip which was even sent "overseas" by the police IGP for verification). So long as Atuk agents could screw Najib, the glaring damaging unfairness in that setup were:

and the IGP couldn't provide verification but the Najib-Rosmah tape was even accepted by MACC and the Court

(i) minus proper authentication, the recording released out-of-the-blue by the MACC Head was accepted by the court, and far more serious,

(ii) no one in authority gave an eff about the security implications, to wit, a then serving PM had his private conversation secretly recorded (and suddenly revealed by the MACC Boss without any explanation on its existence) - a la the mattress allegedly "used" by Anwar Ibrahim being dragged into court to provide so-called "evidence" of the alleged sodomy he committed (again, in a period under Atuk's PMship).
