Lynas will operate as approved by Mahathir - another Pakatan Capati

FMT:

Lynas gets green light to continue operating

Pakatan Harapan politicians and environmentalists have called for the closure of Lynas’ facility in Gebeng, Kuantan.

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya has agreed to renew Lynas Corp’s licence to operate in Pahang, ending speculation on the fate of the rare earths processing plant which had been a subject of contention since the May 9 polls last year.
In a statement, the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), which comes under the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change, said it was giving a six-month licence to Lynas based on several conditions.
Among others, it said the company must build its “cracking and leaching” facility outside Malaysia within four years of the renewal, after which it would not be allowed to produce radioactive residue exceeding 1 becquerel per gramme at its plant in Gebeng, Kuantan.

It also said the company must identify a permanent disposal facility (PDF) with a written approval from the relevant state government.
“AELB will closely monitor and ensure that the construction and management of the PDF follow international standards,” the statement said.
The agency also said Lynas must get official permission from the authorities of any country before transferring its residue to that country.
Lynas had been embroiled in controversy for several years, with environmentalists and Pakatan Harapan politicians protesting against the plant on health grounds and calling for its closure.
The company repeatedly defended the safety of its processing plant in Gebeng, pointing to multiple reviews carried out by local and international agencies including the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency.
Cabinet members had been split on the licence renewal, with some voicing concern that the suspension of Lynas’ operations would have economic repercussions on Malaysia.
Several DAP leaders said they would continue their protests against Lynas, including by suing the company, if Putrajaya renews its licence.

Kaytee notes:
Ref "it was giving a six-month licence to Lynas based on several conditions:"
(a) must build its “cracking and leaching” facility outside Malaysia within four years of the renewal - given 4 years to do so, wakakaka
(b) must identify a permanent disposal facility (PDF) with a written approval from the relevant state government - by when?
(c) “AELB will closely monitor and ensure that the construction and management of the PDF follow international standards,” - how?
The conditions are nebulous and in reality don't amount to anything substantial, other than 'iffy' promises

This capati will be the death knell for the DAP and PKR

Wouldn't this also mean Mamak will ignore the calls for Zakir Naik's expulsion from Malaysia? Wakakaka, unless Mamak himself is being kicked out.

  1. A facility which would be truly dangerous in the future , such as a Nuclear Power Station I would fervently oppose.
Highly radioactive wastes which would remain dangerous for thousands of years, that is proven science.

For Lynas, I have yet to see the proven science that proves it is dangerous.

Of course, there is no such thing as "harmless" waste. So imposing stiff conditions on waste disposal has to be done.

    1. Bukit Merah's ARE incident not a proven case?

Monazite is mildly radioactive with no known side-effects from its natural stage.

When ARE refined monazite to extract yttrium, a rare earth element, radioactive residuals were concentrated. Thus making those residual highly dangerous.

Similar cases happened in China for the extraction of rare earth elements.

Ditto with the Molycorp's rare earth operation in mt Pass. In fact that operation had had an radioactive incident causing it to close. That incident also forced the subsequent operators of mt Pass mine to rebury the refined residual wastes back into the mining shafts deep underground!

How much scientific proofs u want?

      Until ALEB says so?
