The Breakup of Iraq?

The intrigue begins. Ahmad Chalabi, a trusted henchman of the US Defence Department, and a favourite of US Vice president Dick Cheney has pressed for autonomy of the oil-rich southern Iraq. This push for autonomy will also give great comfort to the Kurds in the north which is not without its oil fields around Mosel.

Both seem to have an American connection. Could the move be “planned” by the American neo-cons and the Pentagon?

However, the Kurd’s aspiration for a homeland may be viewed adversely by Turkey and Iran, both having Kurdish minorities of their own.

Could this move by Chalabi signal the eventual break-up of Iraq? What are the implications for the stability of the region with such a push?
