US bashing of China

Dr. Farish A. Noor is a senior fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore; and one of the founders of the www.othermalaysia.org

I posted his 'China bashing' on 23 April 2008. His words are still relevant today, 13 years after he wrote his piece.

Following was his essay for your perusal:

********

While the simplistic thesis put forward by Samuel Huntington in his work ‘The Clash of Civilisations’ reads like a paltry script from a bad movie, it has to be said that bad scripts are often the most believable and effective. It was Huntington who predicted that in the wake of the Cold War a new sort of conflict would arise, namely one configured along cultural-civilisational differences between the developed Western world and the mysterious, exotic and threatening East.

The two cultural blocs that were said to be the future adversaries to the West were the Muslim world and China , respectively.

In the case of the former, it was opined by Huntington that with the demise of Communism the potential threat of Islam would be realised sooner or later for the simple reason that Islam and the West shared ‘bloody frontiers’ that were marked by centuries of conflict. This thesis, however, is patently false to anyone who has even the slightest idea of the history of Islam and the non-Muslim world, for the fact is that the frontiers of the Muslim world are not marked by violence nor stained by blood, but rather remain porous horizons marked by the eclectic culture of Islamic mysticism or Sufism: From Southeast Asia to China, from Africa to Europe, the furthest frontiers of the Muslim world are precisely where mysticism and the Muslim practice of inter-cultural dialogue and cultural cross-fertilisation flourished the most.

Related to Huntington’s fear of Islam was his fear of China, dubbed the ‘sleeping giant’ by Napoleon more than a century ago and which till today has yet to truly realise and demonstrate its full economic potential. Huntington ’s crude thesis argued that in time the West would have to realise that non-negotiable cultural differences exist between the Western world and the Orient, and that these cultural differences would ultimately serve as the catalyst for an all-out confrontation between the West and China .

As the world stands on the brink of a global recession and as we witness what may soon become a global food and resource crisis, the lens of Western policy-makers and media analysts are already looking eastwards to locate the new ‘threat’ to the global order, namely China.

It is with this thought in mind that we reflect on the rather curious assortment of media tit-bits that have been served to us lately. In a space of a month, the international media have focused on the internal and external developments in China of late. Needless to say, the human rights record of China – not only in its dealings with Tibet but also internally in terms of its treatment of local dissidents – leaves much to be desired. China was and remains an authoritarian state with a brutal policing apparatus that works to ensure that the regime remains in power at all costs, regardless of the loss of basic freedoms and civil liberties to its people.

But having said that, it should also be remembered that the Chinese government is not the only despotic regime on the planet at the moment. Nor should we forget that the Western governments have been willing and able to work with many equally brutal regimes the world over, from the despots of the Arab states to the dictatorships in Latin America and Africa. So why single out China for now? And if China ’s record is something to be looked at closely, we might as well take some time out to look at America’s own human rights record in dealing with the detainees in Guantanamo Bay as well.

The latest craze seems to be the focus on China ’s economic dealings with Africa and how Chinese companies have been investing in the development of natural resources and infrastructure in the African continent. Several reports in the international media – including the BBC and CNN – have painted the picture of an aggressive China moving into the African continent to suck its resources dry and to secure monopolies in areas such as oil and gas.

Yet it has to be remembered that in the wake of the Second Gulf War and the invasion of Afghanistan in 2002, it was America that took the lead in the race to re-establish its presence in the African continent. Fearful of the prospect that the oil and gas reserves in the Arab-Muslim world were being depleted too fast, and that Arab oil and gas will run out for good in less than two decades, American and other Western oil and gas companies have begun to turn to Africa as another source of vital resources for their industrialised economies. Soon after the invasion of Afghanistan the Washington-based African Oil Policy Initiative Group (AOPIG) was set up to promote American oil and gas company interests in Africa . Already many of these companies have secured for themselves lasting monopolies in African countries like Nigeria .

So is all this talk of an ‘aggressive China’ moving into Africa simply a smokescreen to hide the fact that American oil and gas companies are already there, exploiting the natural resources of Africa to serve their own domestic industrial needs? And if China is to expand and develop its economy, then surely it also needs to secure a steady supply of vital resources such as oil, gas and steel?

This, then, appears to be the real reason and agenda behind the spate of China-bashing that we are seeing in the international media today. For if the governments of the West are really concerned about the standard of human rights in China at present, they would do just as well to apply the same standards to themselves and to their strategic allies in the Arab world, Africa and Asia.

For now however, this hypocrisy of the highest level will continue as long as the international community remains blissfully ignorant of the real geo-political manoeuvrings that are taking place in this latest media skirmish between the West and China . A global economic crisis is in the making, as well as a global race for rapidly depleting resources. The media campaign to demonise China today is just the opening round to what will surely be a long-term conflict whose human costs will be borne by the rest of humanity as well.

Australia’s China-bashing is self-hurting

Published: 28-09-2020

Australian Ambassador to Washington Arthur Sinodinos made an outrageous intimidation to Beijing in a recent webinar with Harvard University's Kennedy School. Sinodinos said that Australia was ready to stand up to China, noting that Canberra has "demonstrated a preparedness - at least to date - to wear" economic costs to contest and confront Beijing.

This entirely unprovoked latest threat was made against the background of the bilateral relationship between Australia and China being ceaselessly poisoned and exacerbated by the anti-China crusade - something that Canberra is doing to support Washington's global efforts to contain, suppress and crush China's peaceful development.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan Youth chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin has now been listed as Category 5 patient, two week after he was admitted to hospital for Covid-19.

Shazni Munir, who is also Amanah Youth leader, tested positive on July 19. He was classified as Category 4 patient (requiring oxygen assistance) five days later.

“He has now been listed as Category 5 patient,” said PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasrullah Nasir in a brief post on his Twitter today.

Akmal urged his friends and party colleagues to pray for Shazni’s recovery.

On July 24, it was reported that Shazni Munir’s wife and children had also been infected.

Perak MCA Youth chief joins calls for PM to resign

Perak MCA Youth chief Daniel Wa Wai How said Muhyiddin Yassin must acknowledge his government’s failures.

PETALING JAYA: The head of Perak MCA Youth has joined the call for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to resign immediately to enable someone more capable to lead the country in his place.

The Youth wing chief, Daniel Wa Wai How, said the prime minister cannot force the country to continue living under the current situation after failing to implement effective pandemic control measures during the emergency period.

“We cannot clearly see which direction the country is headed because political turmoil has impacted effective governance,” said Wa in an interview with Sinar Harian.

“Personally, I think the prime minister should step down so the government can be replaced,” said Wa, who is also national MCA Youth secretary.

Wa said the new head of government should be given a six-month term in office to continue the national vaccination programme and make administrative arrangements in anticipation of the next general election.

He added that Muhyiddin must acknowledge his government’s failures because many Malaysians will still be stuck at home in August.

Wa attributed this to poor policies regarding factory operations, which had triggered various workplace clusters.

Bersatu ‘confident of majority support’ for Muhyiddin

Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Razali idris of Bersatu defended the decision to postpone Monday’s sitting of the Dewan Rakyat.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu is confident that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin would still command the majority when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes.

Faizal, who is Tambun MP, said “baseless” allegations had been made that Muhyiddin had postponed Monday’s sitting of the Dewan Rakyat because of concerns that the government would collapse.

“Myself and other Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional MPs are prepared to face (the House) when it reconvenes,” he told FMT. “We are very confident that majority support will be retained to enable the government to continue functioning, while giving focus to the rakyat’s welfare.”

“The question of avoiding the sitting because of concerns that the government may fall does not arise at all,” he said. He added that the government had the required number of votes.

Faizal said the decision to postpone the Dewan Rakyat sitting had been based on the advice of the health ministry. Those who claimed the government had political motivations in the matter had “insulted” a civil servant in charge of advising the government.

“How is it possible that a health ministry professional would act by giving advice based on political considerations?” he said.

He said government critics should be more aware about the pandemic and the dangers of new variants, especially the Delta variant.

“As MPs, we must put the safety of the public as the main priority. Even though we have been vaccinated, we are not immune and can still carry the virus without us knowing,” Faizal said.

Former prime minister Najib Razak says the government is trying its best to avoid possible voting on any motions in the Dewan Rakyat.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has questioned the government’s reluctance to test its support in the Dewan Rakyat.

He said he did not understand the need to constantly issue statements to say Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had majority support with allegedly 115 MPs on his side.

“But when it comes to Parliament, they try their best to avoid voting on any motions in the Dewan,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Is voting that frightening? Why run from a vote as though they’ve seen a ‘pontianak’ (vampire) who’s Covid-19 positive with the Delta variant?”

The five-day sitting of the Dewan Rakyat has been postponed to a later date after the detection of Covid-19 cases in the building.

Chaos erupted in the house on Thursday after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong revealed that he had not given his approval for the emergency ordinances to be revoked, as announced by de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan on Monday.

Subsequently, proceedings in the house were suspended four times before finally being adjourned, supposedly until Monday, before being further postponed indefinitely.

KUALA LUMPUR – The recent hike in the number of Covid-19 fatalities has forced the funeral management team to use backhoes to dig graves at several Muslim cemeteries in the city in efforts to accelerate funeral services.

Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) director Datuk Mohd Ajib Ismail said the team sometimes had to bury more than 30 bodies a day at the Muslim cemeteries on the KL-Karak Highway in Taman Selaseh and in Bukit Kiara.

“Jawi had to take proactive measures by renting a backhoe to dig holes before our skilled diggers take over to prepare the graves.

“We also use the machine to help cover the graves. All this is done to speed up the funeral process,” he said.

The Covid-19 Special Funeral Management Team manages funerals at hospitals and medical centres around Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan, comprising 74 Jawi staff, 21 staff from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department, and 18 from the Armed Forces Religious Corps, including 37 volunteer diggers and 54 volunteer van drivers.

He said the team handled the remains of Covid-19 patients from several hospitals including Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Ampang Hospital, Tuanku Muhriz Chancellor’s Hospital, University of Malaya Medical Centre, National Heart Institute, Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, Putrajaya Hospital, and the National Cancer Institute.

Ajib said that so far the highest number of remains the team had to manage in a day was 93 last Sunday, while yesterday the number logged 74 bodies.

As of this morning, the team has buried a total of 2,352 Covid-19 victims aged between 41 to 80 years from March last year.

Ajib said he was thankful for the close cooperation from various agencies and volunteers that helped the team facilitate funerals, adding that Jawi and the team strove to ensure that all funeral arrangements for Covid-19 victims would be conducted according to syariah. – Bernama, August 1, 2021

Mahia lied to & misled Parliament, his PMO insulted rulers by saying they're puppets - it's only fair NOW for Anwar to be made next PM, says Zaid

Only fair for Anwar to be made next PM, says Zaid

Former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim said the current government had openly lied to and misled Parliament.

PETALING JAYA: It is only fair that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong invite opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to form a new government, former minister Zaid Ibrahim said.

“This is what most democracies ala Westminster style will do,” the former de facto law minister said in a statement today.

Citing his sources, he said 12 Umno MPs had already given their support to Anwar.

This was despite deputy prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob insisting that 40 BN MPs were supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He added that the King could appoint almost anyone to be the next prime minister so long as he was satisfied that he had the support of the majority of the MPs.

Zaid said the new prime minister would have majority support as the current government had conducted “a serious infraction” by openly lying and misleading Parliament on the revocation of the emergency ordinances.

“He (the new PM) will be strongly supported. Even if the King appoints a particular candidate as prime minister with support of 100 MPs at noon, the new prime minister will get 120 by 5pm on the same day.

“That’s how things are in our country.”

He said Muhyiddin’s office had suggested that the Malay Rulers were “puppets” who had to follow every Cabinet decision when he defied the King’s statement on Thursday.

“Even (former prime minister) Dr Mahathir Mohamad, when confronting the Rulers on the issue of immunity in 1993, did not humiliate them when presenting the government’s views.

“Dr Mahathir, who at the time helmed a strong BN government with a two-thirds majority, never made assertions to suggest that the Malay Rulers were ‘puppets’ who had to follow whatever the Cabinet had decided without question.”

Zaid said the King had no option but to appoint a new prime minister now that Muhyiddin was unlikely to enjoy the confidence of the monarch and the rakyat.

The King said on Thursday he had not consented to the revocation of the emergency ordinances, announced by de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan in Parliament on July 26.

In his rebuttal, the Prime Minister’s Office said the decision was made in accordance with the law, adding that the government had held a virtual audience with the King on July 24, attended by Takiyuddin and Attorney-General Idrus Harun, during which they informed him of their decision.

Is Turtle-Egg Head "acting dunno" on possibility of him becoming the new PM?

Interim PM claims merely rumours, says Ismail Sabri

BERA, Aug 1 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today described claims that he will be appointed interim prime minister as merely rumours in media portals and social media.

He said such rumours were probably ignited to muddle the ongoing situation or split the government that is making efforts to resolve the bigger problem of containing the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the people.

“I was also made to understand that in the Federal Constitution, there is no term such as interim prime minister or government I feel these rumours should not be entertained, especially when there are parties trying to divide us because if we do (entertain), the situation will worsen.

“Don’t be caught up too much with what’s being bandied around because the right thing to do now is to calm the situation. Let us all unite as we have bigger responsibilities, and why don’t we just focus on that,” he said.

Ismail Sabri, who is also Defence Minister, told reporters this after handing out food baskets to the needy at the Charuk Puting mosque and also after inspecting the Guai bridge project here today.

He was commenting on reports in media portals yesterday that he has strong support among Cabinet ministers to be appointed interim prime minister to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, with further claims that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership were currently discussing this possibility.

In a separate development, Ismail Sabri said a letter dated July 29 with a Barisan Nasional (BN) logo on its letterhead that claimed 40 MPs were fully behind the Prime Minister’s leadership was genuine.

He said the letter, which had his name at the bottom as the sender, was drafted after consent was obtained by the 39 BN MPs involved following a meeting.

Ismail Sabri was of the view that the letterhead issue was the only reason why BN executive secretary Mohamad Shafri Ab Aziz deemed the letter as fake.

“If I want to issue a press release, what is the letterhead I should use then? The BN letterhead (of course) as the other MPs and I are from BN. To me, there is no issue as what is important is the letter’s contents, which states that 40 of the 42 BN MPs support the current government,” he said.

Ismail Sabri also contended that the matter was not against the stance adopted by the Umno Supreme Council to allow its MPs, other than ministers, from the party the freedom of not having to resign (from their positions).

“ from a legal point of view, if support for the Prime Minister is withdrawn, then the government falls, and so the MPs were of the view that we should support the government to keep it intact,” he said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Malaysia reported 17,150 new Covid-19 cases today, when a six-month Emergency proclaimed to combat the pandemic will effectively expire.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reported that Selangor accounted for the most new cases with 6,326, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,086 new infections, and Kedah with 1,511 new cases.

Johor saw 1,045 new cases while Sabah which is in Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan added 1,002 new infections over the last 24 hours.

To date, there are 1,130,422 cumulative cases nationwide

Today is also the fifth time that more than 17,000 cases have been detected in a day, with the four occasions all happening over the last eight days.

Najib: COVID-19 cases getting severe, what is the Gov’t waiting for?

UPSET over the rising number of COVID-19 cases, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak asked the Government on what would it take for the latter to do something about it.

“People are dying on the streets, in front their houses and clinics. Ambulances are not reaching places on time, hospitals lack space and we don’t have enough containers to keep the dead.

“These are our news headlines now. I can’t imagine what would happen when cases soar up to 24,000 daily, as projected under the National Recovery Plan (NRP),” he said in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, Malaysia recorded 17,786 cases on new COVID-19 infections, the highest so far, indicating that the highly contagious Delta variant is spreading beyond the Klang Valley.

The number of active cases now is nearing 190,000, with over 9,000 deaths recorded so far.

Many hospitals have gone public on the sheer magnitude of the problem, urging well-wishers to donate containers as their mortuaries have run out of space to keep dead bodies.

Yesterday, Malay daily Harian Metro confirmed that a person found dead on the streets of Pekan Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat, was due to COVID-19.

On that note, Najib urged the Government to act now by providing effective intervention methods to contain the coronavirus and help the overwhelmed public healthcare system.

He added that providing containers and “reopening and closing sectors” alone would not help to resolve the matter, given the dire situation.

“Hundreds die daily and we are talking about people’s lives here. They are not mere numbers and statistics that you provide to the public every evening,” the Pekan MP retorted. – Aug 1, 2021.

Zahid: Don’t change the “ship”, just boot out the “failed captain”

Zahid: Don’t change the “ship”, just boot out the “failed captain”

AMID criticism for its continued support for Perikatan Nasional, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi offered an analogy of the function of a ship, its captain and the sailors manouvering the vessel.

“Why do we call for the Prime Minister’s resignation but stay in support of Perikatan? It’s like this. A ship sails according to its captain’s direction.

“If the captain fails to give proper direction, the ship will not reach its destination. Unfortunately, the captain is too egotistic to admit his failings. Therefore, the captain needs to be replaced with someone who is more capable.

“Similarly for a Government, it is led by a prime minister, who decides the way forward for the administration,” he said in a Facebook post.

Despite mounting various criticism against Perikatan since its inception in February last year, former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak surprised many quarters two days ago by saying that his party supported the coalition.

He added that Umno only wanted Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin’s resignation for his failure to contain COVID-19 and rejuvenate the ailing economy.

Mahiaddin’s critics upped the ante after his administration received a rare rebuke from Istana Negara, with the Agong voicing displeasure that the Emergency Ordinances (EO) were revoked without being debated at the Parliament and prior to His Majesty’s consent.

Take responsibility, Pagoh MP

Elaborating on that point, Zahid said that Mahiaddin should take responsibility over the current political mess, given his role as the leader of the Government.

Using points from academics, the former deputy prime minister said that Mahiaddin has the authority to select and dismiss ministers, together with the ministries involved.

“He has the power to call for Cabinet meetings and the prime minister is not subject to the latter’s advise.

“The prime minister decides on the administration’s direction and he can establish any Cabinet-level committees, or even outsiders to advise him.

“So, that is the reason why we need a capable person to help the prime minister’ post, someone who can steer the Government’s machinery with clear directives,” Zahid noted.

The Bagan Datuk MP added that on July 7, Umno had already decided to withdraw support from Mahiaddin and called for an immediate replacement for public’s sake and to protect the sanctity of the royal institution.

“Once COVID-19 is contained, then the new prime minister can advise the Agong on when to call for a general election,” Zahid remarked. – July 31, 2021

Party veep believes some defectors regret triggering formation of ‘backdoor’ Perikatan govt last year

PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang calls on party defectors in last year’s Sheraton Move to ‘do the right thing’ for their jobs and the nation.

GEORGE TOWN – PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua, has extended an olive branch to defectors who left the party along with Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali in February last year, saying they should abandon Perikatan Nasional for the sake of their political longevity.

“I think some of them regret (sanctioning the Sheraton Move) and helping trigger the formation of the ‘backdoor’ PN government, which has now become a hostile government embroiled in countless controversies,” he told The Vibes.

He said PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim may well be magnanimous and accept the defectors back into the party in the name of saving the country and to get on with the real task at hand: containing the Covid-19 pandemic.

We need to swallow our pride. This is not the time for politics, but to come together for the sake of the country and for some of their careers.”

Azmin led a group out of the party to become independents temporarily, to form the PN administration with the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-led Bersatu, as well as PAS and Barisan Nasional.

Chua said Muhyiddin may eventually cave in to the pressure to resign as prime minister, leaving Umno vice-president and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as his natural successor.

“This would mean that Umno is back in power, and when it is in power, I doubt its leaders would want to entertain Azmin and Co. They will become expendable.”

The more pressure Umno exerts on Muhyiddin, he said, the more the latter could opt to resign sooner rather than later so as to preserve his legacy.

Their (Azmin and other PKR defectors’) careers are hanging in the balance, so it is better for them to do the right thing for their careers and for the nation. Help correct the mistakes of the past.”

Muhyiddin Is Toast – Agong Has Retaliated

As expected, the backdoor Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has cowardly locked the Parliament again, ordering the final day of the 5-day special parliamentary sitting scheduled for Monday (August 2) to be postponed indefinitely. And again, the acts of cowardice were carried out with the assistance of the over-rated Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Under the pretext of some Covid-19 cases detected within the Parliament compound, the illegitimate chief executive has again ran away from the August House. The joke on the street is that the “Malay first” PM Muhyiddin is more powerful than Thanos, but there’s only one thing he is extremely terrified – a vote of confidence, or any vote, in the Parliament!

But why the country’s most powerful man is still so afraid of the Parliament when the State of Emergency will be expired on Monday (August 2). The answer is because of a very damaging new letter from King Sultan Abdullah dated July 29, the same day the defiant Prime Minister Office (PMO) stubbornly and arrogantly issued a press statement to lecture the monarch.

On Thursday (July 29), the Agong (King) issued a royal statement, officially denied he had consented to the scrapping of emergency laws as claimed by de-facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan. Worse, Sultan Abdullah said that he was “deeply disappointed” by Takiyuddin’s false statement in Parliament that the Emergency Ordinances had been revoked on July 21.

Sultan Abdullah said the government had “confused” Parliament, had “misled” Members of Parliament, had “rushed” to revoke the emergency ordinances, had “disrespected” the rule of law, and more crucially, that it had “undermined” the function and powers of the Agong as the head of state as per the Constitution. These alone are sufficient to prove that the regime has committed treason.

As the Parliament became chaotic over the stunning royal revelation of the regime’s treason and treachery, as well as attempts to usurp the powers of the Agong by faking the revocation of the emergency laws without the consent from the monarch, the Parliament building was suddenly put under lockdown. Cases of Covid-19 suddenly appear, forcing some lawmakers to undergo screening.

Hilariously, while the Opposition was locked in the Parliament, pro-Muhyiddin Cabinet members were allowed to travel to the prime minister’s mansion, where he has been hiding since Monday. As the scandal appeared too huge to fix, the parliament meeting on Thursday was adjourned multiple times till it was scrapped entirely for the day – under the pretext of Covid-19 cases.

The regime shamelessly and arrogantly digs in, refusing to either resign or test its legitimacy in the Parliament, even after the prime minister was caught with his pants down in a web of deceit and lies. Drunk with power, the Prime Minister Office went into spinning and twisting phase to save face, arguing that Agong must obediently act on the advice of the prime minister, no matter what.

The PMO, shocked with the King’s stunning exposure, said in a press statement dated July 29 that Muhyiddin had written a letter to the Agong on July 23 advising the ruler to revoke the Emergency Ordinances, and again with an audience on July 27. Still, the burning question remains – why was the laws revoked as early as July 21 when the Agong only received the letter two days later (July 23)?

After the power-crazy Muhyiddin locked some poor MPs in the Parliament building, gathered his loyalists in his mansion and lectured King Sultan Abdullah, the next day, the prime minister wished the extremely angry monarch a “Happy Birthday”. But the damage is already done. On the same Thursday that Mr Muhyiddin issued his press statement, the King has retaliated with his own letter of decree.

In his retaliation letter, Sultan Abdullah laid out the chronology. Apparently, the letter from Mahiaddin alias Muhyiddin dated July 23 was sent to the Istana Negara (Palace) in Kuala Lumpur. The King only received it the next day (July 24) at his palace in Kuantan, Pahang. After studying the letter, on the same day (July 24), the monarch ordered for a virtual meeting with Takiyuddin and A.G. Idrus Harun.

According to the 4-page leaked letter, during the online meeting at about 4:30pm (July 24) with both de-facto Law Minister Takiyuddin and Attorney General Idrus, the Agong had issued his decree in four areas of concerns, of which all of them had been ignored and rubbished by the government. Below are the four items of interest:

  • Agong had not consented to sign the application because it was done in a hurry – just two days before the sitting of Parliament, apart from the need for it to be gazetted.
  • Agong needed time to analyze the application in detail and subsequently to gain more opinions or insights from other (nine) Malay Rulers.
  • Agong wanted the Proclamation and the Emergency Ordinance to be tabled and debated in Parliament in accordance with Article 150 (3) of the Federal Constitution.
  • There are a number of questions that need further clarification, especially in relation to legal action or compound that has been issued under the Emergency Ordinances for the period between 21 and 25 July 2021.

In the letter, the King has again expressed his deepest disappointment because his order and decree to both de-facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan and Attorney General Idrus Harun during the virtual meeting for the proposed cancellation of the Emergency Ordinances to be tabled and debated, was not complied with. Clearly, both individuals have insulted and disrespected the Malay Sultan.

Sultan Abdullah said Takiyuddin, in his capacity as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law), has given contradictory and inaccurate statement in the Lower House on July 26 that the government had already revoked the Emergency Ordinances on July 21. Hence, the King believes Takiyuddin has misled the Members of Parliaments.

While the Agong said in the letter that he was aware of the need to act in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet as per Article 40(1) of the Federal Constitution, the monarch, however, said the final decisions in regards to the revocation of the emergency laws should take into consideration of the situations as follows:

  • The proposal for the cancellation was submitted late on July 24, 2021. Additionally, it was too close to the date of the Parliamentary session, which was scheduled to begin on July 26, 2021.
  • Any revocation of the Emergency Ordinances that is being rushed and not tabled in Parliament will lead to a negative impact on the Agong (King).
  • The revocation of the Emergency Ordinance is done in a way which undermines the function and powers of the Agong as the Head of State as described in the Federal Constitution.
  • The effective date of the cancellation of the Emergency Ordinances was backdated (retrospective) to July 21, 2021 while the application was received only on July 23.
  • The revocation of the Emergency Ordinances is the Constitutional power of the Agong, and not the Cabinet alone.

In conclusion, King Sultan Abdullah said in the letter – “I decree that the proposal to revoke the Emergency Ordinances must be tabled and debated in Parliament before the royal assent.” And that’s the reason why the panicked Muhyiddin regime has postponed indefinitely the last day of the parliamentary sitting next Monday. It still does not know how to fix the scandal.

The best part of the letter is that the monarch managed to take the opportunity to lecture the prime minister, reminding the government that all the ordinances must be tabled before both Houses of Parliament (which Muhyiddin regime tried to avoid) as prescribed under Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution. The King also said it must in line with the principle of accountability under Article 43(3) of the Constitution.

Obviously, the King was smarter than Muhyiddin and his band of crooks and traitors think. The Malay Ruler did not want to sign on the dotted line because the whole scheme was illegal and unconstitutional from the beginning, and he refused to be dragged into the political game to save the backdoor prime minister as eventually the monarch will get the blame from the people.

After previously tricked, conned and insulted by the Perikatan Nasional government, the King also wanted to play safe by consulting his nine brother rulers, of which he was not able to because the illegitimate government of Muhyiddin wanted to rush the back door revocation in order to avoid a vote in Parliament. He finally realized that Mahiaddin just wanted to use him to do all the dirty works.

Not only the incompetent regime was late in submitting the proposal on July 24, the backdoor government had the cheek to backdate it to July 21, and wanted the Malay King to close one eye and play along with the evil conspiracy. Had the monarch blindly signed the proposal, Muhyiddin and his gang will pull similar tricks again in the future to their “puppet King”.

The fact that the King fought back, arguing that he too has the power to decide whether to give his consent or not to the revocation of the emergency laws appears to send a message to the prime minister – Agong is not a toothless tiger or an errand boy that the regime can order around. And he has presented nine (9) compelling and legitimate reasons not to play ball. The ball is in Muhyiddin’s court now.

It’s not only Muhyiddin who knows how to dig in. Now, the King too has dug in his heels, issuing another new decree for the revocation to be tabled and debated in the Parliament, before he signs. The prime minister cannot accuse Sultan Abdullah of going against Article 40(1). The King is ready to sign, but not before all the procedures and rules are complied with, of which the regime had done none.

In the same breath, the letter of decree clearly demonstrates how the backdoor government usurps the powers of Agong with Takiyuddin’s fake claims that the revocation of the laws had been done on July 21 when in fact it could not even be gazetted because the King has disagreed. You insult the King at your own peril. Muhyiddin is toast. He is royally screwed.

Muhyiddin had his chance, but he didn’t take it

Muhyiddin had his chance, but he didn’t take it

Many Malays were euphoric when Muhyiddin Yassin gained power. We were told to be patient and give him a chance to prove himself.

Almost 18 months later, he has failed Malaysia.

Instead of surrounding himself with competent Cabinet ministers, he retained many of the deadwood from previous administrations. He enlisted men and women who lacked integrity, who had no dedication to hard work, who lacked attention to detail and were incompetent.

The previous Pakatan Harapan administration was riddled with infighting and was slow to institute reforms. Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) is no better. Its leaders are busy clashing with each other, and holding secret meetings to plot their political futures.

What message does that send to the rakyat? What will our youth think?

The rakyat has been shortchanged. What did we get in exchange for the 70 ministers and their deputies who earn handsome salaries and perks each month? Most of these ineffectual ministers were promoted beyond their level of competence.

Muhyiddin was installed as Malaysia’s eighth prime minister, but it was not the rakyat’s choice. That decision was taken out of our hands.

He clawed his way up the greasy pole of politics, and while the PH leaders, now in the opposition, bickered among themselves (let this be a lesson to them to get their house in order), Muhyiddin acted.

Law minister Takiyuddin Hassan is out of his depth. He misled Parliament but he has at least taken the pressure off DAP. Takiyuddin advocated the use of Stalin’s tactics during the Battle of Stalingrad, when fighting Covid-19. Some people now call PAS the new Malaysian communist party, and not DAP.

Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun’s action in telling a woman MP to keep quiet, and switching off the microphone of another, was equally shocking.

Heidy Quah, a young woman who founded the NGO Refuge for Refugees and soon after won the Queen’s Youth Leader award, presented by Queen Elizabeth II, was charged with making offensive comments on Facebook. Heidy found that refugees were being ill-treated and she merely wanted Malaysians to show more humanity and compassion for these people. She related her experience about a refugee mother who had just given birth in a detention centre, but was vilified for the exposure.

What does that say about the Muhyiddin administration? Other social and human rights activists and campaigners have also received the wrath of the government. Why are they afraid of criticism?

Muhyiddin, who once declared that he was a Malay first and Malaysian second, has failed to rise to the test and prove that he is a first-class Malay leader.

He claimed he was going to save Malaysia but the previously slow vaccination programme, the failure to attract investors, the rising intolerance, coupled with the failure to protect the Orang Asli and the failure to safeguard the environment, have proven that he cannot govern.

Malaysia has many competent people who could run the country, but many have left or are leaving because our leaders are too busy politicking. The curse of the nation – racism, religious extremism and “rasuah” – means that it will not recognise its full potential.

People are suffering, they are grappling with issues like hunger, homelessness, the feeling of despair, and the threat to their physical and mental health. Things will get worse before they get any better, but Muhyiddin’s plan to tackle the pandemic by proposing a state of emergency has come to nought.

What does he want for Malaysia? Will he get rid of the incompetent and ineffective ministers? Will he wield the axe in the right places? Will he cling on to power? The pandemic has exposed Muhyiddin’s many flaws but does he realise this?

How can PPVs operate after positive cases but Parliament can’t, asks Najib

How can PPVs operate after positive cases but Parliament can’t, asks Najib

Monday’s Parliament sitting has been indefinitely postponed by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, in line with the health ministry’s risk analysis of the Covid-19 situation.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has questioned why Parliament should be postponed indefinitely due to Covid-19 when an outbreak at a vaccination centre (PPV) in Shah Alam saw the venue closed for only one day.

“It is very hard for anyone to believe that a PPV involving tens of thousands of citizens is allowed to resume operations just two days after 204 officers tested positive, but Parliament has to be closed for an unknown period,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Does the government believe that the lives of 220 MPs are worth more than the thousands of citizens who visit that PPV every day?”

The Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, which is currently serving as a PPV, was temporarily closed for a day (July 13) after 204 Covid-19 cases were detected among the staff there.

Meanwhile, 11 cases were detected by the health ministry at Parliament after 1,183 tests were done there on Thursday.

Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin yesterday issued a circular to all MPs stating that Monday’s Parliament sitting had been indefinitely postponed by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, in line with the health ministry’s risk analysis.

Yesterday’s circular comes after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had expressed his displeasure at de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan’s announcement on Monday that the emergency ordinances had been revoked on July 21. The King said this was done without his consent.

Earlier today, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang called on Muhyiddin to lift the Parliament lockdown to allow MPs to address the worsening Covid-19 pandemic and the “major constitutional crisis” in the Dewan Rakyat.

In a statement, the Iskandar Puteri MP said Muhyiddin should not use Covid-19 as an excuse to “shut down parliamentary democracy” in Malaysia.

“It (Parliament’s postponement) is symbolic of the (government’s) lack of credibility and legitimacy, and its failure to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control,” said Lim.

“The Parliament lockdown on Monday is not only contradictory to the need for a new war policy and strategy to fight the Covid-19 pandemic based on ‘Living with Covid’ instead of ‘Zero Covid’, but also a gross abuse of power.”

Doctored video of Kula (DAP VP) alleges PN-led government trying to wipe out Malaysian Indians with "special" vaccine

Doctored video of me is malicious and cruel, says DAP’s Kula

M Kula Segaran pointing to the fake video in a TikTok clip that he had produced to say that the claims made in the viral video are false.

PETALING JAYA: DAP vice-chairman M Kula Segaran says he is the victim of a doctored video that shows him with his mask on but with someone else’s voice dubbed to make it seem like it was him speaking.

In the clip that has gone viral, the voice claims that the government was trying to inject Indians with a solution that was different from the actual Covid-19 vaccines.

“It is clearly not my voice. You can check all my videos on TikTok,” Kula said in a TikTok video he had produced to counter the viral video, adding that it was a malicious and cruel act.

The Ipoh Barat MP said that whoever edited the video and mimicked his voice obviously misused their talent.

“I feel whoever has this talent ought to use it positively and develop a legitimate and thriving business. He or his group have the talent to succeed in this field,” he said.

He also questioned if the doctored video was produced by his political enemies.

The video in Tamil had gone viral on social media. The voice in the clip claimed that the Perikatan Nasional-led government was trying to wipe out Indians in Malaysia.

Claiming that Indians were being given a different Covid-19 vaccine than those given to others, the voice says the Indian community would be “finished” (“bungkus”) in two years.

When contacted, Kula told FMT that he would be lodging a police report.

Govt trying to set things right via power grab, says Rafidah

Govt trying to set things right via power grab, says Rafidah

Former international trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz criticised the current practice of ‘transactional politics’, where support can be bought and sold.

PETALING JAYA: The government appears to be attempting to right its wrongs by grabbing power while ignoring democratic processes and the constitutional monarchy, according to former international trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz.

Citing the Malay proverb “menegakkan benang yang basah”, Rafidah said the prime minister and his Cabinet were trying to set upright a “wet string”.

“In fact, the string is now so waterlogged and heavy, with all kinds of dirt and infestations, that it is impossible to straighten, let alone set it upright!”

The result was the increasing political turmoil which had tarnished the country’s image internationally, she said in a Facebook posting.

Through it all, it has also become clear for the people to see the government’s machinations — political planning done behind the scenes, strategies to grab power, and doing whatever it takes regardless of accountability and integrity — so long as its goals or the “scheme of things” are achieved.

She was referring to Umno leaders who were given positions in the Cabinet and government-linked companies, allegedly as part of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s strategy (or “scheme of things”) to buy support.

This was supposedly discussed in a leaked audio recording that went viral last year of what was believed to be a Bersatu meeting.

“Clearly, all of what transpired in the ‘scheme of things’ were with specific intentions and objectives, and that the planning was, and continues to be done, only to achieve the personal objectives of the group,” Rafidah said.

She said the nation’s direction, which has now gone awry, must be corrected “not according to the dictates of individuals or groups”, but in line with global requirements so Malaysia will not sink amid the increasing competition.

She also criticised the current practice of “transactional politics”, where support can be bought and sold, saying it had also resulted in a tarnished political system that undermined national development, marginalisation of democratic processes, and a disregard for the constitutional monarchy.

“The people, especially the more vulnerable, continue to bear the brunt of this chaotic administration,” she said.

“The management of the Covid-19 pandemic seems to continue to be moved by political elements.

“Please remember. Man proposes, God Almighty disposes. God Almighty has his own ‘scheme of things’ that we puny humans cannot prevail over,” she said.

On Thursday, Istana Negara issued a statement that the government had not sought consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to revoke the emergency ordinances, triggering a constitutional crisis.

This came after de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan had stunned the Dewan Rakyat on Monday by stating that the ordinances had already been revoked on July 21.

PETALING JAYA: Opposition MPs have decried the decision to postpone Monday’s sitting of the Dewan Rakyat, saying it reeked of cowardice on the part of the government and it was proof that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has lost majority support.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the postponement was a political move by Muhyiddin to avoid calls for him to prove his parliamentary majority on Monday.

“With this new development and the crisis between the prime minister and the Palace, it further exposes him as a troubled prime minister,” he told FMT.

“Muhyiddin is under more pressure and this (postponing Parliament) is his last attempt to save himself,” he added.

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said the move proved that Muhyiddin was “scared” to go to Parliament.

“He has lost his credibility, his honour and is in an open war with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he told FMT.

Both MPs were referring to the disagreement between Istana Negara and the Prime Minister’s Office over the revocation of the emergency ordinances – laws made by decree without reference to Parliament.

The postponement was announced earlier today in a circular to all MPs from Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin.

It stated that the postponement was made by Muhyiddin in accordance with the Standing Orders and was in line with risk analysis by the health ministry.

Eleven Covid-19 positive cases were detected in Parliament, making up less than 1% of the 1,183 samples taken.

However, Salahuddin said the prime minister’s actions had disgraced the country and Parliament. He said Muhyiddin could not “run away” from today’s decision.

He also said “the Speaker’s image is ruined” and both the Speaker, Azhar Azizan Harun, and Muhyiddin were “not brave enough to face us on Monday”.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng also suggested that the postponement had come about so that Muhyiddin could avoid a vote in the Dewan Rakyat.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, who is Pontian MP, said many MPs were expecting such a move from Muhyiddin.

“Many parties think it’s not because of Covid-19,” he said on Twitter. “The political crisis must be resolved immediately and the constitutional crisis must be addressed. Face it bravely…”

Former prime minister Najib Razak, who is Pekan MP, questioned how Covid-19 had “suddenly attacked” Parliament after the King’s rebuke of the government, saying they had disrespected the law, disregarded the role and powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and deceived Parliament.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii of DAP questioned the basis for the decision to postpone the sitting, saying that there was no scientific basis for claiming there was an outbreak of Covid-19 in Parliament House.

Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah of PKR said the government has to answer to Parliament and the rakyat about the revocation of the emergency ordinances. The decision to postpone the Parliament sitting because of Covid-19 was the “weakest excuse”, she said.

She added that “tampering” with the Federal Constitution and misinforming Parliament and the rakyat are “serious offences”, and noted that leaders in other countries had resigned for lesser offences.

“If they are so-called leaders, be brave to stand up for your actions,” she said.

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he would still head to Parliament House on Monday despite the announcement of the postponement.

“You want to stop me, stop me. I’m not scared,” he said.

DAP’s 42 MPs would also go to Parliament House at 10am on Monday, Lim Guan Eng said.

The postponement of the Dewan Rakyat sitting came after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had expressed his displeasure over the government’s announcement that the Cabinet had decided to revoke the emergency ordinances, saying he had not given his consent.

The Dewan Rakyat erupted into chaos with calls for Muhyiddin to resign and the day’s sitting was suspended four times on Thursday. It was then adjourned for MPs and parliamentary staff to be tested for Covid-19 where two cases were discovered on Parliament grounds.

Since then, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has been among those calling for a no-confidence vote against Muhyiddin on Monday.

Lawyer calls for new council to run country

In a separate development, lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla has suggested that a new emergency ordinance be drafted to extend the state of emergency until Dec 31 or a date based on the King’s discretion.

Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla is Mahathir's lawyer
He's promoting the MAGERAN - I wonder why? 😂

He also suggested that administrative powers during the extended state of emergency be given to a “Royal Advisory Council” which would advise the King.

He said the government would then be able to manage the Covid-19 pandemic without political interference.

Hannah Yeoh is the ONLY DAP politician proposed by Atuk to join the MAGERAN 😀😁😂

Extract from FMT:

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, who was deputy women, family and community development minister in Mahathir’s second Cabinet, also wished the veteran statesman a happy birthday in a Facebook post accompanied by a picture of them together.

“This photo was taken on a day I sought to hear for myself your explanation on all the questions I had post our time in Putrajaya,” she said.

“I may not like everything I heard, but I know you were honest in answering these questions. And this is what I like about you – your honesty, even if it means losing votes.”

Thanking him for giving up his time to return as prime minister, she said there were many Malaysians who still wished him well and want “the happiest birthday” for him.

“I may never live till I’m 95, but I know even if I do, I cannot do what you have done in the last few years – persistent in fighting those involved in 1MDB.

“Happiest 95th Birthday Tun!”

Aiyah Yeo Bee Yin, lu beh yeow co lang lah

(Aiyah Yeo Bee Yin, You lack good personal relationship lah)

😀😁😂

Anwar blames J-Kom (previously JASA) for rumour of his audience with Agong

MM Online:

Anwar blames J-Kom for rumour of his audience with Agong

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today blamed alleged propaganda by Department of Community Communications (J-Kom) for a rumour that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong would be holding an audience with him.

The PKR president also reminded the media to check with official party source before reporting on anything regarding himself.

“Those who support them are J-Kom. This is the time to slander as they want to increase anxiety of the people and then said Anwar wants to have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“I want to tell the media that if you want to report, ask an authentic source. If I had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, then the statement should be from my office or the office of the Opposition Leader, not from a ‘reliable sources’ or sources close to PKR.

“Don’t get involved with PN games, with J-Kom. I want to advise them because they won’t last long. So don’t be too arrogant,” Anwar said in a Facebook Live session.

Several media had quoted unnamed sources as claiming that the Opposition Leader had been granted an audience with Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Istana Abdulaziz in Kuantan earlier.

It was PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil soon after.

Anwar also lauded the #Lawan protest in Dataran Merdeka earlier today, saying the movement control order and restrictions by the government have failed to revive the economy and lessen the pandemic have dissaffected the youth.

“This is what makes young people restless. High unemployment. Graduate unemployment is very high.

“That is why young people are taking bold action as spokespersons for the people, [becoming] the conscience of the majority who voiced their opinion to ‘lawan’ because the current government has failed,” he said, using the Malay word for “resist”.
