The Selangor government has decided to put on hold its proposed centralised pig farming project in Bukit Tagar, following protests from residents in nearby areas.

Noting that the matter had been discussed at the state executive council level, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim was instructed to identify an alternate site.

“Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was informed (of the decision) last Wednesday (Jan 21). We are aware that there are strong objections, so I have directed that alternative areas be identified,” Sinar Harian quoted Amirudin as saying today.

The Gombak MP said this at a press conference after his New Year’s address at the Dewan Raja Muda Musa in Shah Alam today.

On Friday (Jan 23), Anwar said he would discuss the issue with Amirudin and suggested that the project be put on hold first, or relocated to a more suitable area, provided the technology used is “fully assured”.

Noting that the matter had been raised during a cabinet meeting, Anwar said then that although the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the Selangor administration, the federal government remains concerned as it has triggered public unease.
Amirudin today also stressed that the state government will not disclose any locations or alternative proposals for the time being, as no final decision has been made.

He also admitted that the matter requires more prudent handling, including better engagement with stakeholders, a social impact assessment, and a “more orderly process”.

Pointing out that “confusion and misunderstanding” at the initial stage caused it to appear as though decisions had been made hastily, Amirudin assured that the state government will continue to protect the interests of relevant parties.

“Decisions with the operators will continue. We want a solution that is fair, reasonable, and does not disrupt social harmony,” he was quoted as saying.

On Jan 17, Amirudin said the government has yet to identify an alternative location to replace Bukit Tagar as the new site for relocating pig farms in the state.

However, he emphasised then that the state government remains open and is providing space for discussions with all parties to ensure a more orderly and comprehensive livestock management system.

On Jan 10, Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah issued a statement via his office, firmly opposing the renewal of licences for pig farms in Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat.

His Royal Highness challenged assemblypersons to live next to the pig farms themselves to experience the issues firsthand.

The Selangor ruler also disagreed with using Kuala Langat as a temporary site before the pig farming industry moves to Bukit Tagar, fearing that the pollution, which has persisted for 16 years, would further deteriorate.

HRH Selangor has already said 'nay' so suck on that.

Devolve to Sarawak or Cambodia or Thailand or Vietnam.
