Perikatan Nasional is scheduled to hold an extraordinary meeting on Thursday (Jan 29) to appoint a new chairperson, following Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation.

According to a Jan 23 notice issued by PN deputy secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan to the coalition’s supreme council members, the 8.30pm meeting will take place at Gerakan’s party headquarters in Cheras.

The meeting, Takiyuddin detailed in the notice, follows letters from Gerakan president and PN deputy chairperson Dominic Lau as well as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang on Jan 7 and Jan 10, respectively.

As such, in calling for the meeting, Takyuddin, who is also the PAS secretary-general, cited PN’s constitution, which allows for the convening of the coalition’s supreme council upon written requests from at least half of its component parties.

Besides confirming Muhyiddin’s resignation and appointing his successor, another agenda for the meeting is the election of a meeting chairperson from among its deputy chairpersons, as per clause 8.3(II)(b) of the coalition’s constitution.

The opposition coalition consists of Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP).

PAS poised to take over?

On Dec 30 last year, Bersatu president Muhyiddin confirmed his intention to resign as the PN chairperson effective Jan 1, 2026.

Following in his footsteps, Bersatu secretary-general and Selangor opposition leader Azmin Ali announced his resignation as PN secretary-general, also effective Jan 1.

PN election director Sanusi Nor, however, later pointed out that Muhyiddin’s resignation will only be formally confirmed in a meeting with the coalition’s leaders.

Last week, a PAS source told Malaysiakini that the Islamist party has put forward three names as candidates to replace Muhyiddin.

The three are allegedly Sanusi, who is Kedah menteri besar, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, and Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

Hadi has repeatedly stressed that the party is set to lead PN following Muhyiddin’s resignation.
