Iran protests: Tehran says President Trump’s goal is regime change

• Iran’s UN ambassador accuses US President Donald Trump of encouraging political destabilisation in his country and inciting violence in a letter to the UN Security Council.
• Iranian state television acknowledged reports of a high death toll from nationwide protests, and quoted Ahmad Mousavi, head of the Martyrs Foundation, as saying “armed and terrorist groups” were to blame.
• The internet has been cut off in Iran for more than five days, US internet services company Cloudflare said on Tuesday.
• Several European countries summoned Iranian ambassadors to protest the deadly crackdown on demonstrations, while Iran’s ally Russia condemned what it described as “subversive external interference” in Tehran’s internal politics.

  Iranian Sunni leader says deadly protests an ‘unprecedented catastrophe’

  One of Iran’s most prominent Sunni scholars has condemned the killing of protesters and says those responsible will face justice.

  Mowlavi Abdolhamid said the violence at demonstrations is a national tragedy.

  “The massacre of thousands of protesters in Tehran and other cities of our country over a few days was a horrific and unprecedented catastrophe,” Abdolhamid wrote in a post on X.

  He said the killings have plunged Iranians “into grief and rage”, and “deeply wounded the conscience of free people around the world”.

  Abdolhamid also warned that those who instigated the violence would not escape responsibility.

  “Undoubtedly, those who ordered and carried out this crime will be held accountable in this world,” he said, adding, “in the hereafter they will also deserve divine punishment.”

  Abdolhamid, a longtime critic of the Iranian authorities, has previously spoken out against the use of force against protesters and discrimination against Sunni Muslims in Iran.

  Iran’s top judge says assailants must face immediate justice

  Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei says those “who beheaded people or burned people in the streets” should be “tried and punished as soon as possible”.

  Mohseni-Ejei said last week that there will be no leniency for those who help “the enemy” against the Iranian government.

  “If anyone comes into the streets for riots or to create insecurity or supports them, then no excuse remains for them. The matter has become very clear and transparent. They are now operating in line with the enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.

  Officials have accused the US and Israel of ordering and arming “agents” to stoke violence at demonstrations and target security forces and protesters.

  Iran to hold funerals for security forces killed in demonstrations

  Iranian state TV says officials will hold a mass funeral for the “martyrs and security defenders” who died during the nationwide protests.

  The semi-official Tasnim reported the funeral will take place at Tehran University on Wednesday and will be the first among many state funerals held for security forces in the coming days.

  Iran’s state media have reported more than 100 security personnel have been killed in the violence since the demonstrations began more than two weeks ago. Authorities have blamed “foreign elements” for instigating attacks on officers.
