MIC is always open to meet with BN to discuss the party’s future in the coalition if invited to talks, with party president SA Vigneswaran stressing that the two are not enemies.

In a Sinar Harian report, Vigneswaran pointed to the party’s history of being a BN component for more than 60 years.

“For now, we have not received any invitation to meet with BN. We can meet any time. Everyone needs to understand that BN or Umno are not MIC’s enemies; we’ve been together for more than 60 years.

“What we (MIC) are doing now is for the party’s future, because it seems MIC is not given space when decisions are made; this does not mean MIC wants to threaten anyone.

“MIC has never been that way, and we had never wanted to slight anyone,” he said.

Sinar Harian reported that BN chairperson and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had instructed his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, to arrange a meeting with the MIC top leadership.

MIC’s ties with BN have been straining of late, with the party’s delegates approving a motion to quit the coalition during its annual general meeting on Nov 16.

Vigneswaran had then said that although party delegates had voted to quit, the final decision is up to him and the party’s central working committee (CWC), but that they are leaning towards cutting ties for now.

The dissatisfaction stems from the perceived sidelining of MIC and MCA by Umno within BN, with the Chinese-based party also discontented with its status in the coalition.

The MIC president told Sinar Harian that the date of the CWC meeting to decide on the party’s fate in BN had not been decided yet, but it will be held soon.

Vigneswaran added that party leaders should refrain from commenting on the matter to avoid escalating tensions.
