Zahid calls for calm following series of minor earthquakes in Segamat

PETALING JAYA: Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the public to remain calm following several minor earthquakes in Segamat, Johor, saying the government through its agencies will continue to monitor the situation.
He said the public, especially those in the area, were advised not to panic but to remain on alert.
“I reported to the Cabinet yesterday, and I was also informed by the directors-general of the meteorological department (MetMalaysia) and the mineral and geoscience department that the matter will continue to be monitored.
“God willing, the state and national disaster management committees will continue to monitor and ensure the preparedness of residents in Segamat and Johor as a whole.
“I urge the people not to panic and I hope no major disaster will occur,” Bernama quoted him as saying after an event in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, today.
Zahid, who chairs the National Disaster Management Agency, also asked the public to perform special prayers to be free from any calamities.
A weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.7 on the Richter scale jolted Segamat again at 7.29am today, making it the fifth tremor in eight days in the district.
MetMalaysia said the quake occurred about 10km northwest of Segamat at a depth of 10km.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, has also directed all mosques and suraus in Johor to hold special prayers following the series of tremors in Segamat since the first incident was recorded on Aug 24.

It's a good distraction...together with some very unfortunate Malaysian Tofu Dreg construction exposed.
