PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin has denied allegations that he defended the provision of petrol subsidies for foreigners, as claimed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Muhyiddin described Anwar’s claim that he had made such a statement as a lie and slander.

“I’ve never said anything like that, and I strongly refute it. That statement is defamatory and false.

“What’s more troubling is that it was made by the prime minister in Parliament. I’ve always known that the principle and policy of subsidies are meant for Malaysians, not foreigners,” he said on Facebook today.

Earlier in the Dewan Rakyat, during the Prime Minister’s Question Time, Anwar claimed that Muhyiddin had questioned the government’s decision not to provide petrol subsidies to foreigners.

Anwar made the remark in response to an interjection by Hulu Terengganu MP Rosol Wahid, who asked the prime minister to name the opposition leader who supported allowing foreigners to enjoy petrol subsidies.

“That was a statement by your own leader - Pagoh (MP Muhyiddin). Next time, read properly. Tell him to come to Parliament, don’t just shoot blindly.

“I’ve already answered this. Read Pagoh’s statement on why we are burdening foreigners, because foreigners also contribute to the country,” said Anwar.

‘Where and when did I say it?’

Muhyiddin, however, challenged Anwar to show where he supposedly made the statement defending foreigners on the issue.

The Bersatu president reiterated that he had never made such a statement and accused Anwar of failing to verify the claim properly.

“I want to know where he read it? Which book? Which video? Or which press conference did I supposedly hold? There was none.

“This means the prime minister didn’t do a proper check and made a statement in Parliament, as if every statement made in Parliament is true. I say this is a lie," he stressed.
