DAP Youth has called for Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to resign from his position as Malacca exco, accusing him of insulting disabled persons and using diversionary tactics when criticised.
DAP Youth organisation secretary Lim Zheng Han said that Akmal's actions were clearly intended to divert attention, after he suggested that disabled person cards be given to DAP Youth, and mocked it for allegedly not understanding Bahasa Malaysia.
"DAP Youth absolutely did not 'misunderstand' Akmal's meaning. In his previous Facebook post, he clearly stated: 'Give them mirrors and disabled person cards', and labelled DAP Youth as 'stupid'.
"Although not stated directly, the context and word arrangement are crystal clear. Akmal equated DAP Youth and disabled persons with stupidity, and attempted to use the 'disabled' label as a tool to insult political opponents," Lim said in a statement today.
Akmal yesterday hit back at DAP Youth leaders who accused him of insulting the disabled community.
According to the Merlimau assemblyperson, his earlier Facebook post saying DAP Youth leaders should be given a disabled person card was aimed at the wing and not the community.
Lim said that such statements not only demonstrate Akmal's "profound contempt for disabled persons" but also clearly show the weakness and immaturity of his leadership style.
Akmal failed to reflect values of compassion, responsibility, or integrity, he added.
"When criticised, he not only refused to apologise but continued to mock that DAP Youth doesn't understand Malay - a cheap ploy to cover his own mistakes and portray himself as morally superior.
“This is dangerous and irresponsible populist and racial tactics, reflecting a typical 'the more criticised, the more attacking' strategy," Lim pointed out.
Be a good example
He said that as a youth wing leader of a political party, Akmal should exemplify dignified leadership for the new generation.

"He not only insulted DAP Youth, but also mocked and exploited the entire disabled community for his political interests.
“A young leader who fails to acknowledge mistakes and instead attacks critics with accusations is unfit to continue holding the Malacca exco position," Lim added.
The war of words erupted after the DAP Youth wing criticised him for repeatedly harping on the controversy over an upside-down national flag at a Chinese school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.
It was later revealed that the flag had been mistakenly raised that way by an employee with special needs.
Akmal, in response to the flag gaffe, had urged stern action against those responsible and for authorities to investigate Lukut assemblyperson Choo Ken Hwa’s claim that the incident was the result of a mistake by a special needs worker.
Stressing that the national flag must be honoured, not desecrated, Akmal decried what he described as a recurring pattern of offence followed by remorse.

I reckon to Akmal, the targeting was at the Chinese vernacular school rather than the flag being raised upside down. He needs "fuel" to burnish his "pahlawan-ness".
